the reason is that the back of block has cut out for rear main bearing cap ,on 3 bearing engines this was sealed by seal housing holding rear main seal on 5 brg engines by crucifix seals down the side of main brg cap,they allways leaked on red blocks so used gasket on tdis,

Thanks James...I'm still trying to source a rear gasket, but they all seem to be the same as the one from earlier. I'm guessing it's a trip to the Dealers n many pennies being left there!
 
Right, am at the point of doing release bearing now, but am having problems fitting the new one. Book of lies says 'Ensure guide slippers engage with release bearing', but I can't seem to get them both to sit ontop of the release bearing sleeve at the same time :confused:

One will go on but it's too tight to fit the 2nd one on. Almost as though the fork is too narrow.

Use some electric tape to hold in place as you reassemble things
 
some are like that pull off and check it isnt and after refitting arm pull and but brg on as far forward as possible the carefully push onto guide
 
Managed to sort out the release bearing, problem was the new release fork was slightly misshapen, the fork was squashed slightly so it wouldn't fit over the bearing sleeve with the slippers.

Having trouble getting the engine to mate with the gb at the moment, so have given up for tonight. The problem I think is that with the engine being mounted so far back, the hoist doesn't quite give enough reach, even at maximum. Was like this with the hoist I hired before, another 2 inches of reach and I would be laughing.

Will give it another go tomorrow morning, for now a cold pint of cider and a steak on the griddle will do me though ;):)
 
just out of interest fella, what 'setting' is your hoist on? i have a 2 ton one and was wondering if having it on the 1/2 ton setting would be abit iffy lifting an engine? id have **** loads of reach then!

If in doubt us some counter weight on the end

The hoist I'm using, lent to me by Egor (top fella) is a 1 tonne one, and I'm on the longest extension, which says max 250kg (1/4 tonne). You'll be fine with yours on 1/2 tonne.
 
i have been known to remove bolt and pull extending arm out past 1/4 point but not with arm below horizontal ,but not suggesting you do it engine is a little heavy
 
ahh sound! i was thinking it was bit iffy! i took engine gearbox and transfer box out all in one go with it on 1 ton..
 
Just got the engine and gb to mate

Ooo err :doh::D

With a little help from a five foot crow bar to wiggle the gearbox side to side. Massive relief :D

Just finished working on her now, engine is running and have had a quick test run up the road, all seems to be working alright :D

Haven't finished building front end up yet or interior, so won't be driving to work tomorrow, but certainly on Tueday I will. :)

Agree 100% mate :D

Have just given it a proper test run, having put the interior and front end together again. Everything seems to be working perfectly - clutch really bites nicely now and can put my foot down without worrying about it slipping. :)

Thanks to everybody who has helped me on this thread - and biggest thanks go to Gary (Egor) for lending me his hoist - top bloke :D
