Hi All
I have a TD4 ES 53 plate recently i had a problem selecting the gears i took it to my local garage and on checking it they found that the clutch Resivoir was empty of fluid.:( However they said that they could not see anywhere that the fluid had been leaking from so topped up the resivoir and now the gear changes are as smooth as ever. When i asked them where the resivoir was so that i could keep an eye on the levels myself they just replied that it was tooked away and quite hard to get to can anyone please tell me where it is.And could it be possible that the fluid levels drop to nothing over a period of time without a leak :confused:

As far as i'm aware, the td4 is a sealed unit..if it ran out of fluid then there was a leak somewhere. Now even though they are a sealed unit you can fill them up, its just a bit tricky...if it starts playing up again then you may need to have a new master/slave unit as they shouldn't lose fluids.

cheers for the info much aprreciated it like i said when it come to M8 i havnt got a clue except for the basics lol it seem fine now i suppose it just depend on how slow the leak is untill i run into problems again

If the leak can't be seen then it'll be coming from the slave cylinder, which is located inside the bell-housing. Bitch of a job to replace as you've got to take lots of bits off, including the front subframe, rear prop, IRD and driveshafts before you can even think about getting the gearbox off to get to the slave cylinder.

The reservoir is located on the bulkhead, behind the engine. It's not that big and, to be honest, you'll easily overlook it. It's not too tricky to fill if you need to do it yourself. You'll probably need to bleed it as well if the fluid level gets too low. I did mine in the dark in the middle of December a couple of years ago shortly before my slave cylinder completely failed, so it can be done :)

What happened with mine was that, like you, I lost gears, found the reservoir empty, filled it, bled it through (bleed nipple is next to the gearbox), and it was OK until the fluid disappeared again a week later... :mad:

This was a week before Christmas and I couldn't face fixing it on the drive in the freezing cold/wet so it had to go in the garage. It ended up having both master and slave cylinders replaced plus the clutch (as the gearbox was off). Total bill £800, which was nice...! :mad:

Best of luck to you. I'd find a decent garage that isn't going to rip you off if I was you, as this problem will most likely rear its head again. Sorry... :D
