I knew that I would need to replace my clutch release bearing when I bought my 1997 110 CSW 300Tdi... I have an increasingly frequent 'whirring' noise on start up that stops as soon as I push the clutch pedal. The clutch also feels gritty at times with an occasional shudder when starting off. Its not getting any better and an oil leak (gear box out job) will force my hand soon.

I am looking at getting the bits online and I have a good landy mechanic to do the job.

I am having a look online and first thing is the clutch release bearing... £35 for genuine and £10 for Britpart/Bearmach on Lrseries site. I know certain Britpart things are not so good but what about bearings?

I will replace the clutch plate and release fork plus oil seal..... anyone recommend a good clutch plate make (apart from Land Rover) and any other bits I should replace?

What bits would you buy if doing this job?..... many thanks :)

How much would a garage charge/ or your time does it take to change a clutch? Do you want to pay it/ do it again very soon? Britpart bearings NO NO NO NO! I would look for Borg and Beck, AP Lockheed they do kits of pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing. Worth going for a quality rear crank seal inorl. Oh and strengthen the back of the pivot point on the clutch fork by welding a bit of steel plate across.

Replace EVERYTHING when you have the gearbox split from the engine: cover, plate, bearing and fork.

Vaelo or Borg and Beck for the cover and plate. Get an OE part bearing, regarding the bearing basically SKF make the bit that counts, if you get a bearing and you cannot read SKF off the bearing face don't fit it, as it will be a cheap bearing and thats the only bit that really counts here.

Crank seal - good idea to change it, BUT, I would leave well alone unless you are pushing above 150K or there is of oil visible, and enough of it at the back behind the flywheel to matter. If you do change it get a OE part - it really is worth the extra £15, think the OE is about £25.

Don't forget the spigot bearing!!!! Goes into the back of the flywheel and holds the box main shaft.

Only a quid or two, to get it out: Fill the hole with grease, put an approx same diameter bar into hole and with a short sharp tap with a hammer ....plop!! it will just pop out !

haha its a landrover!! nuthin eva just plops out!! unless its not meant to! :D

OEM everytime for bearings and clutch as its a pain in the backside to have to change it again in six months time. In this case you definitely get what you pay for.

Thank you all very much... printed off and will ensure I get good stuff and take the advice :)
