Hi folks,

This has been a bit epic, ongoing drama of my clutch!

Engine is a 300tdi from an old disco (swapped in a year or so back), gear box is the r380 from the 1997 defender.

Basically story goes that the clutch started to drag, notably unable to roll backwards in 1st with clutch down. Gradually got worse and now can't really select gears when truck is moving, but you can when stationary with engine running.

So I've done:

- new master cylinder
- new slave cylinder
- new flexi hose
- new clutch kit inc release bearing and arm
- had the flywheel skimmed
- put in the longer push rod from the slave cylinder

Essentially whatever I do makes zero difference. Any thoughts? Is this actually a gearbox issue?

Thanks very much guys,

Nick

What is the longer push rod on the slave cylinder?
The push rod needs to match the slave cylinder according to our man in Canada.

Can't see it's a gearbox issue.
The pressure plate pushes the friction plate against the flywheel and motion (rotational torque) is passed to the input shaft of the gearbox.
Release the pressure on the friction plate and torque dissapates and the gearbox shaft stops rotating.

Your initial issue sounded like the clutch fork/release arm was failing (they do) but having replaced that and with skimming the flywheel (how much by ?) and a new clutch (not an LOF I hope) that isn't likely to be the issue.

Why did you change the push rod ?
Are you 100% sure you have put the friction plate in the right way around ?
I put one in backwards once and it drags on the flywheel even when the clutch pedal is pressed.
I was only able to select gears when the engine was off and needed brake to stop it creeping forward in 1st.

The newer defender ones are 98mm and the older (like what would be on disco 1 i guess) are 105mm.

You find both types on eBay easily, my defender being newer had the short one so I tried the other.

The guy who skimmed the flywheel suggested it partly because he'd taken a bit off as well and thought it might be my issue.....

As long as the slave cylinder is correct, the difference is the length of the piston inside.

It's a valeo clutch, followed the instructions in Haynes for fitting, but you can't put it the wrong way round from what I can see as all the middle section of the friction plate sticks out on one side and this would foul against the flywheel...

What you're describing though is very much my issue.

First thing I would do is bleed the clutch slave cylinder and see if there is any improvement. Did that to mine the other day after difficulty changing gears and back to normal now. I bled it until all the fluid had been replaced.

Yep that's where I started too, then replaced it and did all the other stuff as above....

The one I have fitted is part FTC5072 ... I can't find any alternative.

I'm suspecting something weird is going on due to mating an older disco 1 engine to a newer defender r380 gearbox, bit I can't figure what!

There is a video in this thread with regards to slave pushrods.
