Guys hare is silly question but better to ask than run into problems later.
I'm preparing to remove the engine of my defender 200tdi (1991). Started to remove hoses wires etc. I note that the steering box is only about 4inches away from the engine. Is that enough to slide the engine out or does the steering box also need to come out.

You are doing it the hard way !!!
Remove mats, Lift the floors, reomove gear box tunnel, undo props at gear box and t box ends, remove cross member, engine crane throw door around gear box tbox, undo bell housing bllts, remove slave and 8 gearbox support bolts. Pull box away from the engine and replace what ya parts.

That's how I do it. Only addition is remove fan to allow the engine to tilt a bit unobstructed
 
Sounds like your clutch might be jamming up with some errant springs if its not the fork. I take engine out for clutch change. 6 of one half a dozen of the other.
