Need a bit of help on working out what's happened to my 90s clutch. Went out this afternoon for a drive. I quickly noticed that the clutch pedal was only stiff right at the bottom of its travel, however I was still able to get it into gear. As I got further away from home the clutch pedal was doing less and less. Final i decided to stop. Tried to start it and engage the clutch nothing happened couldn't get the gears to go in. When the engine was off the gears still moved. Spent the rest of the afternoon getting towed home. Was hoping someone could shed some light on the problem. Much appreciated
 
Is there any fluid in the resevoir? Could a leak, it could be one or both of master / slave cylinder gone or even the clutch rod having punched through the clutch fork (though I think this would mean the clutch would not push down...)
 
Bet the clutch slave cylinder is leaking, it usually goes into the bell housing so not always obvious at first, do you have the wading plug in.
Failing that it could be the flexi pipe balooning so get someone to depress clutch and feel if the pipe expands.

Do you check and top up the clutch master cylinder often?

Checked the level in the master cylinder it appears tI be low. Took the 90 off road yesterday wonder if that is linked. Is there a specific type of fluid to use or can it be generic. I assume it must have leaked very quickly considering it was fine yesterday and deteriorated very quickly today.
 
When they go they can go quite quickly but a slight weep is usually the way then you start to pump air when it gets lo in the res,
I once had a leaky one when on hols put 1L through it in 2 weeks
Any rake fluid does the job.

Thanks for the reply will replace the oil and try and locate where the leak is coming from.
 
Just replace both master and slave cylinders. They're relatively cheap and usually fail in quick succession.

Tried bleeding the system however that did not do anything will now order a master and slave cylinder. Does anyone have any tips on bleeding the system, in the end I manged to slacken the bleed nut, however apparently I need a tube submerged in clutch oil is this necessary.
