Hi, Had my 1.8 without any probs for a year. did over 500 miles in it this weekend and on the way home noticed the clutch started to make a clunky noise when changing gear. not always but sometimes. When it does clunk feels like somethings loose when pressing the pedal, does not affect changing gear apart from the noise.

any ideas.

Something up with your clutch components, could be the clutch cover, release bearing or the release fork, doubt its the friction plate.

How many miles has it done and has it ever had a new clutch?

its got 58000 on the clock. Not sure if its had a new clutch, didnt see paper work (for clutch replacement) for it when I bought it.
 
Doubt it then, are you hard on the clutch, slip it a lot, hold it on the clutch on hills etc... hold the clutch in when waiting at lights?
 
Your release bearing might have taken a bit of a hammering, when you push the clutch this component is what pushes a moving part (clutch cover spring at engine speed) with a stationary part (in terms of engine rotation - the release fork) so holding it in this position puts extra wear onto this component, it will eventually wear and can cause squealing knocking etc as the bearings collapse
 
Yes and no, the part is about £5-10 however it does mean gearbox or engine out.

If you have a good flat surface to work, borrow/hire an engine crane whip out the engine and replace ALL the clutch parts, its worth it! Total cost was about £70 for my defender last month.

The gearbox coming out is not ideal unless you have access to a hydraulic ramp.

The local LR specilist wanted 250 to do it on mine, that gives you an idea of cost.

If your phoning about, tell them you want a new friction plate, bearing and you might as well put a fork in, I did those 3 plus the clutch cover (since it was my cover that was knackered). Most places will use local parts shops, if this is the case, provide your own parts as it they cost a fortune from partco for example and are about 1/5 the price from Paddocks/Craddocks.
 
As Discomania says the roller bearing is worn.

Sounds worse than it is, you can drive them for a lot longer. But if 58k then clutch is prob due for renewal. If the engine rattles when on idle, press clutch in to see if it goes quiet.

You can jack the fron of the hippo up high and drop the gearbox on to a pallet truck, no need for a hoist

Update. I was Still driving with the clunking noise as changing gears was o.k. until i can sort a garage out to do the work.

driving down the road and clutch pedal fell to the floor. It now either sticks down or can be moved back in position and stays there, until you try it then it just goes to the floor.

No clutch at all so driving home was exciting.

does this still sound like what you originally though?

Further update. Found the problem. See link for pic. looks like the pedal has come loose from the plunger, reattached but keeps popping out. There a little ring/spring thing that I assume holds the plastic O of the plunger to the pedal. Do these brake or should there be somthing else to hold this on.

Hi, yep. little clip that connects the clutch pedal to the clutch plunger Had sheard away. Get your head down ion the foot well and all will be obvious if its that. If not I know the clutch cable is a common th9ing to go. Problem was I was a little rushed so had to buy the full clutch plunger cable for £59 quid just to get the little clip to reuse. Sold the rest on ebay. Hope this helps

OK - found the problem I guess. It's (deep breath, here's where I show NO mechanical knowledge) the "bolt" that joins the clutch pedal to the part going through the bulkhead into the motor or gearbox. Well, what broke is not actually not the "bolt" but the little ****ty plastic press on clip that fits on the the end of the "bolt" to keep it in place. The press on part has fractured and thus slips off. So it looks like a simple repair..... unless it's a symptom of something else happening... could it be?
What's surprising is that it's such a shoddy little piece of plastic.... (or maybe not so surprising......)
 
Hi, yep, looks like a simple fix. I think you can get the clips on the web somewhere. I didnt have time and had to but the whole cable for £59 just to get the clip. Took the clip of and sold the rest of ebay to get my money back.

at least its not going to be very expensive adn well done on finding the problem.

just an update..
clutch fixed under warranty, although according to mechanic, the ****ty little plastic piece that clipped the whole pedel to the plunger had broken because the actual clutch pedal was faulty and had stressed the plastic....:rolleyes:
so whole unit changed.....
