Hi folks

Hope you're all keeping well

My 110 300tdi has developed a fault with the clutch pedal jamming halfway down. The clutch is not engaging at all. This is not the common pivot point issue. Has anyone had anything similar happen and if so was it possible to remedy it without dropping the gearbox?

Thanks in advance

When I had a problem with the clutch pedal jamming and not returning (you had to pull it up with a toe) it was because the clutch pedal spring had broken, however this did not effect the operation of the clutch itself, just the pedal movement.
How can you be sure it is not the pivot point? If the clucth is not engaging, rather than no disengaging, I would suggest that the problem lies in the mechanical in the bell housing as the clutch spring will be trying to engage the clutch (the at rest position) and something fairly substantial must be preventing it form doing so.

Hi dag019

Thanks for the message. I have had that issue before, which was just caused by a combination of the hydraulic fluid being a bit low and the pivot point needing some lubrication. This is different in that the pedal goes about halfway down and then won't budge, and the clutch doesn't engage. Someone else mentioned a misaligned thrust bearing as a possible cause (it had been left standing for a while before this happened and that can also cause problems).

Just really hoping that someone else may have experienced something similar and may be able to give me some pointers.

Cheers

Mick

Are you sure you haven't burst through the clutch lever.
You will have to get under and have a look.

When I had the systems you have just described it was because of the pivot point punching through the arm. the last clutch issue I had was stiffness around mid travel and that was a mis-alignment of the fort against the release bearing because one of the slipper pads had split. when I removed it this had hen also resulted in the fork itself twisting slights, but the clutch still operated correctly. I still think it sounds mechanical which would mean dropping the box to investigate.

Yes I will check that, otherwise it's going to be a gearbox out job!

When it happened to me it turned out to be a warped clutch cover. Gearbox or engine out time i'm afraid.

Yes I think you're right. I slackened off the bleed nipple and the pedal went to the floor so definitely a clutch issue. Will be dropping the gearbox on Wednesday and I'll let you now if you're correct!

Cheers

If you are unfortunate enough for it to be the usual clutch arm issue, make sure you also replace the pivot post and the slipper pads or the new arm won't last long.
Don't ask how I know. (That was on a Discovery, which is apropertwatofajob!)
