Hi,
Yesterday my 90 was driving fine and changing gear perfectly. Today driving to work I noticed it was much harder to down shift. Driving home from wok tonight, I noticed that the clutch was a lot softer than normal. Also down shifting was nearly impossible. Managed to get home by forcing it into gear sometimes. Noticed as well that when the clutch was fully down the car was in drive and pulling forward.
As its pitch black out and chucking it down, I haven't looked to see what the problem is. Hoping I can get some pointers of where to start. I.m hoping its nothing major, just a case of tightening a cable, not a new clutch.

sounds like a clutch slave or master cylinder

usually its the master but id change both as they are cheap and usally the other fails soon after ( this happened on both my defenders within 2 months of owning each )

Check your clutch fluid reservoir, you might have a leaking clutch master cylinder or more probably a leaking slave cylinder, if its the slave cylinder your in luck they are about £10 and take a hour or so to fit and bleed.

mines a bit contradictory to "Mr nasty" but that's purely because of what I have seen on mine and customer vehicles :)

Heh, that's ok mate, I have never had any issues before with any Landrover or Range Rover classic clutch system until a couple of weeks ago, where like the OP I thought my LT77 was knackered, but it was the slave cylinder that had let go.

Iv had a lot of problems with them , every defender I have had so far has had replacement cylinders

on my yellow one the master failed in town , limped it to a parts supplier and replaced it myself in the carpark , an hour later I drove it home :) a month later when out playing my slave let go, mate had a spare but the pipe thread hole was different so just transferred the piston and seal from his into my casing, then carried on playing for rest of day and drove home , been like that ever since ! I should replace it really

after getting the yellow one stuck recently ( very stuck in brechfa forest thread) my mate come up with my TD5 wo winch me out , only to pick me up because the master cylinder failed ! , replaced that then about a week later the slave went

will be replacing in pairs in future

So you think I should look into changing them both? Any particular recommendations?

I would change both yes , as I was in a rush I took whatever was in stock I think it was Delphi or lockheed

another member may be able to help more with what make to go for but don't go bearmach or britpart

What Yellow90 says makes sense to swap out both, if they are both looking ropey, but if for example the master cylinder looks newish and just the slave is leaking I would just change the slave or what ever part needs replacing.

Yeah I thought you'd say avoid britpart.

for good reason;)
depends if you want to be an expert at swapping cylinders :D
buy 10 britpart ones of each and at the end of the week you will be able to do it blindfolded , then buy one good one to last :)

Usually if you change one, you are more likely to change the other soon enough so for the expense I would change them both at the same time.

Cheers chaps. Got them both changed. I wanted to do it myself but didn't have the time. I've been working 11 hour shifts the last 2 weeks. By the sounds of it though I would of struggled. It took the mechanic 3 hours to get get the clutch box off. He had a mare apparently. Got dingpro parts. We'll see how they get on.
