Hi, Anyone explain or Advise please?
Yesterday my wife called me from up the street where she was with our 1998 Freelander 1.8i Stat Wag, saying she could not get it into gear! I went up jumped in and off it went no problem!
I Drove into town today and done some shopping, came back to the freelander only to find same again, but this time it did not rectify itself! I tried a few things but to no avail and ended up waiting 3.5 hours to be trailered back to home!!
Started her up during offload from trailer and into gear no problem and reversed off the trailer, seems ok again - for now!!
If anyone has experienced this i would appreciate some advice and possible cause. Clutch bites at half travel and is operating master cylinder.
I'm thinking its hydraulic but not sure. Weather really bad here and can't get her into my garage to investagate as its full of post extension build crap!!:confused:
 
Darmain had a good post about changing his slave cylinder. Do it before it fails properly though ;)
 
Thanks for that Mantamad, i'll check tomorrow if weather get a bit better! I've also started getting intermittant warning lights on for ABS,Hill descent and Traction control in last few weeks, not sure if related problem?
 
Thanks also Skynet - does sound like slave cylinder, i've not replaced one before but pretty good on the tools, I'll check out Darmain posts.
 
The slave cylinder is inside the bell housing so you could be a while underneath. Check the actuator arm too, there is a bracket that can bend if it seizes. ABS sensors and reluctor rings are prone to failing in turn but check or replace the switch first. Check the brake fluid level too.

I've been out this am and had a check around, in the peein rain! I am getting all gears in and out no problem,engine on and off,clutch biting about half travel of pedal.I got the wife to operate clutch and there is a fair amount of distortion on the slave cylinder/bracket but i cant understand how this would cause an intermittant loss of gears then ok again? Is it possible to lubricate to ease problem? i'm thinkin to just pull the whole lot apart, renew clutch and hydraulics but i dont want to be too hasty if its only a quick fix required. I hate problems that are not plainly obvious and i cant rely on Minty until this is sorted out!!!

replaced master and slave sealed units system, took 25 minutes ish. 58 quid from the bay of flea delivered. all gears no problem and no crunch into reverse at all as yet. seems this was the problem. i await the next cos it will come!
 
My 2003 Freelander 1.8i is suffering exactly the same problem and had been back into the garage for repairs. New Clutch Hydraulics fitted and the clutch pedal switch changed. The situation is now getting worse again only three weeks after service. I can shed some light on this and I think its a design problem. My business is delivering using the Freelander and I do a LOT of stop starting and turning in and out of side streets. Off I go in the morning, gear changes are OK but after less than 30 mins around the side streets it can be virtually impossible to get the *--* thing into gear. On two occasions now the car has failed to go into gear in dangerous traffic situations resulting in some near tailgate crashes when cars behind have anticipated me pulling away and the missed gear has meant I have decelerated just over traffic lights. I think it is some sort of transmission wind up problem in the 4x4 mechanism putting load on the gearbox. Landrover if you are reading this, it NEEDS SORTING before someone has a serious accident!
 
that dont sound good, i've heard that viscuous coupling can cause this and maybe that needs checked to ensure it is slipping and driving when it should. sounds like when its warming up you're getting the problem so it could be related? plenty info on checking coupling on here, its worth checking out.:confused:
 
Too good to be true, think clutch is the problem. Hydraulics helped but problem has returned! I'm gonna change clutch, new one ordered!!

i had a 1.8 petrol that did the same thing,but only in town in stop start conditions,a new clutch slave cylinder/master cylinder kit sorted it,i think the constant in out of the clutch was heating up the old fluid and wasnt as effective,
 
Hey all,
Just removed clutch and hey presto, nothing wrong with it!!!!! Release arm was pretty much seized and i found 2 alien metal parts, one inside clutch unit and the other jammed behind release bearing. I can only assume that release arm was the cause. Tempted to just refit the same clutch as it looks like its only done 5000 or so miles but for 70 squid i'm just gonna fit new. Cleaned up and lubricated release arm and its free as a bird now.
I'd like to get my hands on mech that did change the clutch previously as he'd forced the dowel bolt into bottom of blind hole and it had picked up, took me 2 hours to get that b*stard out!
No Idea where alien parts are from, they look like 2 parts of a 3 piece circlip arrangement but i can't find where from, similar diameter to release bearing but it looks intact.
Hopefully when its all back together she'll be fine!
