I replaced the master cylinder on my Defender TD5 and looking at it, the outlet for the switch is on the top.

So wouldn’t that leave an air pocket in the cylinder? I can’t see that bleeding the system from the slave cylinder would move the air from there. Is it necessary to do anything about it, maybe wedge the pedal down and then unscrew the switch until fluid came out of the threads. Then tighten it back up.

Sorry for being dumb, you have an electrical switch on your clutch master cylinder? What's it for?

It’s to reduce fuelling when you depress the clutch pedal, presumably to make gear changes smoother.
Also it’s used on the cruise control where fitted.
Never standard on Defender but all the hardware is there you just need to fit the switches and a simple wiring harness.
