evening all

i borrowed the sig-others Freelander (Freelander 1, 2002 td4) today as I needed to drive a few hours up to Northampton - on the way the clutch went. Got recovered down to a local garage who have taken a look at it and given me a quote for around 650 to replace the clutch but warning me that until they get into it they wont know if there is also an issue with the duel mass flywheel. if there is there is another 300quidish to add to that.

I trust this garage and have always gone there, i am just wondering what you all think of the quote? its about 300quid more than the internet suggests. the garage said that its about 5 hours work to get the clutch out and replace, so about a days work. does this feel right?

Thanks!

On our R40 club forum we have a chap whom fits clutches all day long for a living, he as stated that in all the time he as been fitting clutches he as only ever seen one which the duel mass flywheel need changing, also for the £650 are they changing the clutch, slave, and master because that is what I would want doing for that price, if just three part clutch /slave then pay no more that £450, by the way the guy whom fits the clutches on the R40 takes about 3 hours and that is off axle stands.

If the R40 takes 3 hours to change the clutch. The Freelander will take 5 hours. There's a lot more stripping down needed. That's one of the reasons I have an auto. However £650 + the flywheel is to much.

nice one thanks Arctic. Will check in the morning what is included in the quote. Good news re the duel mass flywheel, if we chuck that much at her old freelander I dont want any additional surprises! Great help, thanks.

Yes it's a big job but £650 is ripping the arse out of it.
LUK clutch kit from Eurocarparts is £200 and I bet they could get it cheaper with discount so over £450 for 5 hours labour is a bit much.

Don't imagine there are many good outfits on less than £90 / hour, and they've got to guarantee their work

Find a good independent mechanic rather than a big outfit. You'll be talking to the man doing the work and the price will be more reasonable.

£500 (give or take) for a clutch, slave and fresh oils and labour

A new DMF is around £350 or so (from my local factors)

That very much depends on where you live! £50 and hour where I live and this guy has been maintaining my vehicles for the last 10 years and is excellent!
