but seriously, it is a matter of opinion some say engine out, some say g'box out. I did mine gearbox out method but I had access to a workshop ramp which made it quite easy (relatively). See what others say.

Thanks, I have heard you can do it by pulling the box back and resting it on the cross member so you have a bit of room to work in would this be possible?

I did it the engine out way as i had other jobs to do on the engine aswell but to get the engine out you have to drop the gearbox vertually to the floor and if using a mobile engine crane you will need to remove the front wheels and lower the car so the brake discs are touching the floor so the straddles of the engine crane miss the axle as when lifting the engine out the front suspension lifts about a foot and inders the engine lifting over the front panel, so removing the gearbox is probably easier but as said would be better if you have access to a ramp or pit if not get someone else to do it hope this helps :)

That would be do-able, be bloody fiddly if your doing it on the ground and I reckon it would take 2 of you to manouver the gbox safely with a couple of trolley jacks but definatley the way I would go if I didn't have acces to a lift.

BTW it's **** loads easier to get the top bolts off the bell housing if you've got an air gun.;)

Good luck.

Bull**** I've removed several engines from disco's using an engine hoist, and have never had to lower gearbox or remove front wheels. My advice to you young man!! is get rid of ya ****ty little hoist and get a decent one. :p

if you removing gear box hiring an engine crane to hold gear box through passenger door /tunnel is easiest and safest

sorry but it was the first time i took a disco engine out before and i am mainly geared up for series trucks and whilst doing the disco i found out a disco is a lot harder than doing a series truck although the engines are more or less the same :)

dont you apologise :)

Had to do mine. Easiest way for me was On ramps rest box on cross member. No need for hoist through vehicle unless your taking box out altogether. Take a look at bustersbus how to pics. I wouldn't have attempted it if it wasn't for that. But followed His advice and everything went great. Apart from I had to take it out again because the pushrod for the Clutch slave cylinder fell off inside bell housing. didnt replace the retaining clip. Got two new ones from Landrover only pennies. Did the job right and hey presto. Sorted. Oh yea When you get another fork. Weld a hefty piece of metal over the back of it so the rod doesnt come through again or Buy a heavy duty one. Go to my pics check out the two pics of my forks. new one with lump of metal welded to it. The lad who welded it couldn't resist putting a piece on with ford on it lol

P.S Get two new slippers and thrust bearing aswell. I'm going to have to take mine out to do thrust bearing now as i didn't have time before. Oh and leave the two top bolts out of bell housing as it will make it easier to do again next time.

I also did mine buy pushing the box back and resting on the cross member, definately made easier by the fact I was working in a mates pit!!

I have changed my engine a few times and currently changing my G/box and all I can say is removing the engine is MUCH easier.

If I was to replace a clutch or the like, engine out gets my vote.

And also never had to remove front wheels, but do need to hoist engine up to get to the top bell housing bolts on a disco. So you were half right Cornish

yeah if i ever have to do another disco engine out job again i will defo get a better engine hoist, basicly with the lifting chain vertually straight and hook and chain as close to the engine as possible and jib fully extended i just couldn't get enough hight mainly because the suspension was following the engine if you know what i mean and even then it took two of us to carefully drag the engine over the front panel hence why we had to remove the wheels.

Doing it like this would I have to remove the cable from the hand break to allow the box to come back?
