Just wondered what you thought about this. It happens occasionaly normally when on hills waiting in traffic, will get the horrible clutch burning smell you get but no slip whatsover.

Can nail it in any gear and no slip at all, in fact its more solid than my sons focus.

Do you think its just from where riding the clutch in traffic or something more serious?

From your initial comment of no slip + burning clutch smell I was wondering if its a sticking brake?

I could ask why are you slipping the clutch on a hill? Handbrake not working? Any prolonged clutch slipping even in traffic
Will cause a smell and rapid reduction in clutch life, sounds to me your driving style needs to be revisited,

My driving is fine, its the same hill, not different ones, and I wasn't slipping the clutch, I was pulling away but its a really steep hill.

Ok no offence meant, but years ago had a customer that continually road the clutch,
Even when shown what he was doing he still needed a clutch every couple of months,
Sorted it out by putting a lights on buzzer on his clutch pedal that drove him nuts when he touched the clutch,
After six months he had got out of the habit,

No worries mate

It's just this one hill, which made me post the question, just want to make sure the clutch is ok, it doesn't happen anywhere else and bearing in mind I live in Devon we have our fair share of hills.

Hi

I just bought a freelander 1 td4 with a clutch problem. It was the second time that the owner had got the same problem. At the beginning i thought that he don t know how to drive well, then i read that the clutch of this car is not the best... then i went to the owner's place and i understood! I almost burn the clutch of my car going to his place. Going up going up with a lot of tight turn that you have to do it in two times...
Freelander's clutch and transmission is very delicate, that make a good SUV but for making that kind of stuff is good to choose between 2x4 or 4x4 i think. Same thing happen when you have different tire in front and back (more than 3mm and the IRD has a shorter life if i remember good.) That makes the vehicule sensible in that occasion.

At the end, the freelander i bought had a clutch problem, but in reality the Clutch thrust bearing (what go inside the gearbox) was melted and that gave this plastic burn smell. The plastic sticked to the clutch and started a clutch problem...

Have a look also at the oil system of the clutch... maybe there's something wrong there that make forced the clutch a little bit and no need to quit the gearbox to check it.

Yes can understand you and know what you are saying
Its frustrating for me as this particular hill is very steep but car seems ok everywhere else.
I am actually looking to sell the car which is why I was after clarification so I didn't misrepresent it in the ad.

My wife does that. Sits on a hill, holding the car on the clutch. Her car has an automatic handbrake with auto hold and hill start assist and she still holds it on the clutch. I keep telling her that the clutch is going to cost hundreds of £ more to replace than the brake pads, but it falls on deaf ears.

A lot of women do that and I know because I heard them complaining that their cars have only done X miles and they had to have a new clutch fitted. The bottom line was holding the car on a hill at traffic lights on the clutch...

I saw a mate of mine’s wife do that, but didn’t know her well enough to comment. I was right in the passenger seat and I got sympathy pains for the clutch plate. There was a stink of burning but she didn’t seem to notice.
