Morning All,

This morning, the missus drove me to work and the clutch makes a wirring noise when pressed. When the car is in gear its fine - just changing or stopped etc with the clutch pressed.

Would i be right in thinking that the clutch bearing has gone or is going? Anyone got any ideas on how much it closts to get fixed? Or someone said put some oil in the inspection hole!?!

Any tips, advice or words of wisdom would be grateful!! Only picked up the car on the 5th August... it was fine then though...
 
yes its going ,gearbox out job dont know which car youve got but some are a lot easier than others youll need new clutch kit and if dual mass flywheel one of those unless low mileage car, as a rule of thumb if happens when pedal only half pressed but quiet fully pressed spigot bush or bearing in flywheel/crank if noisy when first and fully pressed release bearing
 
i would do the lot full kit as ive allways had to do the rest soon after when trying to get away with it, 100 k is enough for a clutch even if looks good ,where you thinking of doing it yourself or garage,often if geting garage to do it buy parts yourself you get your choice of quality with cheaper price
 
Probably garage.. I have a local one I trust - just called them - they said it would cost£400 - and that would be with a entire new clutch. Although he did say its not urgent, as you can drive on it like that for a few months - poss even a year or two?
 
It'll definitely be the release bearing. Yes, you can drive it for ages like that, but eventually it'll **** you off and you'll want to get it changed.

£400 is a pretty good price for a complete clutch change, I'd say, as it's a looooong job on a Td4. This is also particularly good value as the hydraulic slave cylinder and release bearing are a combined unit (if my memory serves me correctly) so you'll be getting a new cylinder too. Given that these are pretty crap and prone to leaking you can hopefully prevent the old one leaking in, say, 2 months time and then having to open the whole lot up again to change it :)

I'd get it changed now if you can afford it. My release bearing was a bit noisy for ages a few years ago. I lived with it for a few months, but had to get it all sorted out just before Xmas that year as the slave started leaking. My total bill came to about £800, but that did include a clutch master cylinder too as that was shagged.

I forgot to say - you may or may not need a new dual mass flywheel as well. They can fail. An early indicator is quite a bit of clutch judder. Don't know if you're experiencing any of that?
