I'm puzzled and hope someone out there can help me. A loud clunking noise has suddenly developed when I reverse and lock the wheel over; it's ok when going straight. It happens from about half lock in each direction and makes the vehicle judder as if it the wheel has gone over something. There's no noise when going forward even at full lock.
I first thought about the front driveshaft cv joints, but having had problems with these in the past on other vehicles they normally just click or make a slight knocking, nothing as severe as this. I checked these out in any case and there doesn't appear to much if any play in them. Having read a previous thread about the clunking in the front propshaft CV I'm now wondering if it could be that, but why would it only happen in reverse when locking over? I will be very pleased for any help to get to the bottom of this.

check the VCU - always a good idea - then the rear diff mounts (particularly the front one), then the rear subframe mounts then start looking at the front drive mech.

do a search - good idea too.

Thanks for that. The sound does seem to be coming from the front though. Having done a search a suggestion has been the IRD but how can you tell without first replacing it? I'm still puzzled why it would only happen when locking the wheel over if it is the IRD as surely that wouldn't affect what was happening inside there.

Finally found out where the problem lay, traced the clunking down to the IRD- goosed!! :( Did the tippex test on the VCU, was able to turn it, just, with the aid of a long steel bar through the CV joint and a lot of brute force and ignorance - also goosed!! replaced the bearings as well. Now after about 8 hours of dismantling and re-assembling on the drive, and £1200 lighter in the wallet, I'm back on the road. :) At least the weather was sunny if nothing else.

wel - lets just say mine cost be £6500 in a year in repairs alone. My slitty has cost me £200 - Yu choose.

.... And a Frreelander owner's tastes are sometimes expensive.

That said, our TD4 is the most reliable car we've ever had and costs us peanuts. Never let us down.

Our Defender costs us more to maintain then the TWO Freelanders.

Cheers
