They do this! Are you letting it out right gently or just letting go? Try matching the engine revs with the likely road speed for the gear you're selecting, that helps a lot with the clunking!

Go with odenne on that.

Is it a new thing that's started to happen, or been doing it for a while?

You'll be amazed how much smoother everything feels when you learn how to match road and engine speed.

I get a clunk when I lift the clutch to quickly.

Mine clunks too if you drop the clutch. Matching the revs and releasing clutch slower does stop it.

Could be a bit of backlash in the diffs, handbrake off , out of gear (on the flat) and see how much rotation you have in the props, shouldnt be much if any, chances are you will find they rotate a bit and that could be the source of the clunk, as has been said learn to match speed to gear changes and it'll be a lot less noticeable. Bit of backlash isnt terminal ;)

forgot to add if you really feel the need to narrow it down, remove the front prop, stick it in difflock and see if it still happens :)

I have a similar issue that's started since a new clutch was fitted by a garage I've never used before (and won't again) as clutch failed here in Manchester away from home in Norfolk. I'm not going back as the guy tried to overcharge me and I beat him back down, I know I'll prob end up with a spanner in the works; literally!
Basically all's nice clutch side of things but there's now shed loads of what feels like drive train shunt (that lovely lurch when going on and off the throttle) that whilst always present is now really quite bad and makes me look a proper crap driver to pasengers! It can be avoided with extreme caution on the throttle, but as I say is far worse than one would expect. Any thoughts?!

Pasted from a further thread, I have the same probs as the guy below. ....
Only problem is no one gave an answer on that thread......
Any ideas? Especially the play in the front prop?

rather than start a new thread...
Been having similar noise, generally in the changing up and down in the 3rd/4th/5th kind of area. Got an R-reg 90 300TDI Hardtop.
Noticed today that there's now a "clonk/chink" pretty much in the middle/under me when I lift off the gas - so there's something transmission related.

Parked up, handbrake off, and rear prop shaft is OK - <1/4" movement. But front one rotates about an inch - 5-10degrees or so. What's likely to be the culprit? Front diff - or something nasty/expensive in the transfer box?

I have been living with it now (for about 10k miles), but the "clink" when I lift off the gas suggests there's a bit too much play in there now.

Ideas? (Or rather "how expensive is expensive?" if it's worst case and replacing the xfer box?) And if I was to change the transfer box for more road use, what to go for?

The front prop, this is the problem, it is not the ujs as i have grasped the ujs and prop and try to spin them in different direction; there seems to be no movement. However holding the ujs and prop together there is about 25mm of play.
In what I have no idea

ha ha, the A frame ball joint. the source of my problem which i lived with for 3 yrs. i kept thinking it was the clutch plate or the differentials which were going to cost me a lot.
