After lots of searching on this site i cant seem to get a definitive answer to my problem. When pulling away and changing gear from first to second on neutral throttle i get a clunk which sounds like its coming from the diff. It sounds like a gear catching or something moving. It does it at other times too but i cant seem to narrow down where the problem is. Ive checked the drive shafts and they seem fine. Ive recently fitted pinion seals and flange kits and changed the diff oil as part of a service which seems to be when the problem started. This is the first time the fluids have been changed in a while because the knob head who had it before me didnt bother.
 
If it's what mine had then u need a transfer box overhaul. Crawl under the car and see if there is excessive rotation in the propshafts(i mean more than 15 degrees)
 
i had loads of knocking/clunking under mine up until 2 days ago. It was because the A frame bushes and the forward trailing arm bushes werr worn and had execisive movement so each time i changed gear or made a sudden movement the whole lot was shifting and knocking.
Felt like the back axle was going to break free.
Polly bushed the lot and no more knocking. Just other problems now as everything is tight and has highlighted other issues.
Will it ever end lol

Check the ball joint where the A frame joins in the top of the back axle also.
 
Mine was doing the same thing found four faults
prop uj's
diff pinion bearing(behind the drive flange)
g/box mount(attached to the transfer box)
and the output bearing on the tranfer box to front diff
 
PTO bearing in transfer box also worth a check ... you can do it by removing the round cover off the T-box ... no need to drain EP90 out to do this as it's above the sump.

That's the baby ... I changed the bearing in mine last week as it had collapsed and was whining like a bastid ... but ... the clunk that was there before has also gone as the whole input gear is now tight. :)

Sorry should have been more specific, it's a 2001 D2, Td5 manual which wouldn't have the A frame on the rear diff.
 
Thanks for the advise guys, you keep me sane at times. The saying that "correct diagnosis is key" is really apt for landrovers. Keep the suggestions coming, I'm making a list.
 
I've finally figured out what the problem is. The shaft that fits into the rear hub is excesivly worn and when rocking the car backwards and forwards it makes it click. Has anyone heard of using blue lock tight to glue the shaft into the hub. The hub is still good and I don't fancy paying out for a new shaft and hub assembly.
