hi all done the cambelt--steering box-ect-ect, now i have got one last niggel, a clunk at the back--it doesent seam to be from the transmision--but i am a joiner so wot do i know--could anyone point me in the right direction-- its a 200tdi 90----bloody good site this-allen
 
My money is on the A frame ball joint, do a search as there's plenty of descriptions of the symptoms
 
had another look--with the landys handbrake off--and rocking the wheel , at the rear back and forth --i can hear it-laid underneth i can see that i am not rocking it enough to turn the prop shaft--took the oilseal off and there is slight play as the driveshaft locates the splined hub--enough to pump the oil slightly--is this normal or do i need new hubs? allen
 
Had same, there was slight play on rear UJ, so replaced all of them, BUT the big clonk when pulling away was the A frame ball joint.
Theres always a tad play on the diff set up.
Under load the A frame is hard to check but give it a good inspection, mine passed MOT with tired boot but when I removed it it was absolutely f****d
 
dam i thought i had nailed it--best thing is to swap the aframe balljoint then and then i will know--thanks very muchly--allen

Are you saying you've removed part 19 in the picture and where the drive shaft comes through part 15 is where your movement is?
 
yes mate--just took the plastic hub cap off--then you can see the circlip on the end of the driveshaft
 
I'm sure others will confirm it but I'd say your drive flanges are worn, there's certainly no movement on mine and it would make a clunking noise as it takes up the slack.

The part number in the picture may not be correct, you'd have to check that before ordering
 
they dont seam like expencive itams so i will do them as well (the drive flanges)--thanks again--allen
 
Just a quick thought (probably wrong, but hey....) what you describe sounds as it it could be one of your rear trailing arm bushings. I have the same clunk.....not the A frame but the bush that connects the trailing arm to the chassis. Make sure you check the bushes on the axle and on the chassis. Just check it before you do the A frame ball joint....best to check the easier things first rather than go straight for the hard bits
 
thanks for that idea jacks--but i changed the trailing arm bushes 2 yrs ago--but today as i was going over a stream to get to a beach, i went over a bolder-and herd the clunk dead in the middle at the back--so i think mr marmduke is on the ball--anyway i will check them before i do the fulcurm joint at the weekend--excuse spelling--i am only 60 and i havent mastered it yet---allen
