Hello people can any one help.
Recently bought a 1993 discovery 2.5 TDI When changing gear as I release the clutch there is a clunk from underneath the body. Now I'm no mechanic so I would like to find out if it could be the prop shaft, universal joint?? or clutch. These are things I have been told In the pub!!! The previous owner said it had a new gearbox 4 years ago but has been towing a caravan with it since.
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks

hi
i had the same thing a couple of years ago, also cluncked if you lifted your foot off the throttle and pressed down again. local independant told me all the worst it could be but when they had it in for further inspection found just a pair of bushes worn on rear axle and fixed the problem

transfer box input gear and gearbox output shaft worn spring to mind.

This is why traffic lights go red, redamber, green.................to allow you guys time to take up the slack in the transmission!!!

Thanks guys a few things to look at. Well for a mate to look at anyway spoke to him last night and he says something about the transfer box?! He says if its not too bad live with it!? If its bushes he reckons about pennies worth from paddocks or craddocks.
Will have a look today maybe NOOOOOOOOOOOO not today forgot loads of rugby on TV. Tomorrow maybe
Will post and let you know how I got on
Thanks people

My release bearing sounds noisy on letting out the clutch. I am hoping that it will go on for a while without too much hassle. Whatdya reckon?

£30 for the bearings, £6 for the seals from a Swan Industrial Drives a bearing and seal factors in Hull. When I did mine I got the seals from Haddocks they only lasted month or so, so I replaced them with seals from Swan and they're still OK.

I was replying to kvr.

As for your release bearing how long is a piece of string I''d carry on till better weather to do it. I'm not convinced its easier to take the engine out than the gearbox and transferbox.

Sorry, jumped in to someone elses question bad etiquette. Haynes said engine out rather than gear/ transfer box but what do they know? Its not that bad and having just forked out £500 I'm in no hurry to spend more!

It's six of one half a dozen of the other. More crawling about underneath if you take the boxes out, or slide them back at least. And you need a hoist to get the motor out, for the boxes you need a good trolley jack. In our workshop it is always the boxes that come out as it is quicker if you know what you are doing. (Don't look at me, I don't crawl about underneath if I can help it). I wouldn't worry too much about the release bearing for they are mega strong and are unchanged from Series days. Do fit a genuine one although they are quite pricey. And don't forget the spigot bush and the clutch fork, you'll regret it if you don't change them and they are cheap.

OOGHHH MY GAWD!!!!!! people you are scaring me!
When and how am I to consider all this work? Engine and gearbox out! £500.00 ! Can I just live with this CLUNK? What damage is it doing? if any?
Thanks
Frightened!!!!

Calm down calm down. Read the whole post or even some previous ones and get the full story:
had a full service including cam belt.
Exhaust was shot (original 10yr old) they replaced it and got rid of the cat.
New brakes all round
few other bits and pieces
All for £500 which I thought was good.

The clutch release bearing is noisy and I was just gathering information about how long it would be before things got bad enough for it to be changed. From what I am hearing I will be waiting for the clutch to wear out before I delve in.

Relax its really not that bad!

If you take your Disco to Dublin they'll open the door for you to let the clutch out........
I'll get me coat...

Thanks guys looking to have a quote soon after inspection. £500.00 is like at least a third of what its worth!
I may go back to a series landrover lots cheaper!?

i had exactly the same poblem its just some slack bushes it sounds like ur pulling a train and the carriages are clunking tgether right? thats what i had whole job including a local garage to fix was £50 drove like new its normally the front ones that go, just slide urslef under ur car and try and move ur prop shaft if theres a little play and clunks a little thats what ur problem will be:)

Check the a-Frame ball joint, on the rear axle as well. as thats a common cause as well as is worn UJs

haha think you hit the nail on the head there, mine was proper bad till i replaced the gearbox, transferebox, propshafts, uj's and bearings. and i still have a tad of play.
