Red! for such and experienced poster you can do uj's without a vice for god sake, a 17 mm socket a bit of 3x2 and atl east a hammer or better still a 1kg club hammer, wd40, grease and circlip pliers, jobs a gud un! oh yer and abit of old shower curtain to lie on when arse deep in sh1te!

30 mins tops excluding taking off the prop! so many perfecionists on here ha ha :D

You shouldn't baby the noobies Red tel em how it really is, wen they in the thick of it! chuck the Haynes out the window and use a bit of ingenuity and anything you can find ha ha !

Start with a full service, including oils. And stick a can of injector cleaner in the tank. Once prop shaft is fixed, give it a good fast run.

Am running screaming in the opposite direction... this means I could, one day, NEED a vice??

Last 12K service n prev ownership, by a 4x4 independent, cost £650 6 months and 3K miles ago. Included MoT, a £95 tyre, oil and brake fluid, filters, rear wash switch bulb, new rear axle brake pipes, and weldng a hole in the body sill. Over £300 was labour, doesn't say how many hours. Halving the bill sounds a good enough reason to start learning fast, but talk of vices and suchlike scares us newbies, esp we females!

Don't worry about them, it's just a bunch of old hands showing off.

Do what you can, learn as quickly as you can and keep on asking questions.

Everyone had a first day, you'll learn and start to do things yourself and when you do, you'll feel soooooh proud.

Land Rovers are, honestly quite straightforward to work on. If you can, bit by bit, learn how to do the general servicing you will save yourself loads of money and start to learn about these wonderful vehicles.

If in doubt, ask on here, you will get honest answers which you can use to make sure garages don't muck you about.

quick update on this one . i went to pick it up today and the bloke selling it said he had lost the v5 and the mot but i could easily get replacements :rolleyes: , im not an idiot so i had my deposit back and walked away .

i still got the bug tho and im going to look at an L reg discovery 200tdi with all the toys ( air con , elec everything and 7 seats ) and full land rover service history on wednesday but this one has had a lot of money spent on it and he says it runs perfect and is mot d till december :D .

is there anything i should be wary of with an older one or is the 200tdi a good engine ?

Yer the engines are good for 200k if they've been well looked after and serviced properly. Rust is the biggest problem. As has been said earlier.
 
Hi Buddy I was glad to see you were getting the bug for disco's and more glad to see you recognised a bummer when you saw one. Well done for walking away. I intervened here because I have one for sale on this very forum (300 TDi auto, 7 seat FSH etc,etc,) check it out. I am reducing the price because some little prick with a catapult smashed the back window last week and I have had to dry store it in a mates garage. He needs his space back and I need to shift it as I work in the middle east and its a problem. First 2K drives it away. For the money this has to be the best one around. Over 2k spent in the last 3 years.

The Tdi200 is probably one on the best LR engines in that it is relatively powerful, good on fuel, easy to work on for servicing/repair and is very tunable at little or no cost. It comes with the LT77 gearbox which can be a little crunchy between 1st and 2nd but if you put synthetic oil, like EVO1 in, it improves it considorably.

As has been said, RUST RUST RUST. You need to have a REALLY good look around if you don't want any nasty surprises.

Starting at the back and working forward:

1. Open the back door, lift the carpet and the rubber sound absorbing mat and look for rust. Also if there is ANY moisture in the mat it is highly likely that one or leaks around the glass exists.

2. Check the rear seatbelt anchorage points, there are 3 on the boot floor and 2 on the wheel arches.

3. Bottom of the 'c' post where the upright meet the wheelarch and rear passenger door latches, in there corner there is almost always rust.

4. Check inner & outer sills - this is an expensive time consuming repair if they are shot.

5. In the engine bay, inner front wings.


My wife has a Tdi 200, it has (more recently) been well looked after and even though she (Daisy2) looks a bit scruffy, she runs like a dream and does 35mpg day in day out.

OMG! £95 on a tyre? your parts there sould come to no more than £50, learn fast! We're here to help at every opportunity, and there is something quite sexy about a girl who can work on her vehicle and knows what theyre on about :cool:
 
woohoo i picked my discovery up last night and she survived the 90 mile drive home at speeds of upto 80 mph without missing a beat :D . i put her in for a full valet today so ill get some pics up as soon as i get her back but this - 1993 LAND ROVER DISCOVERY TDI RED on eBay, also, Land Rover Range Rover, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 21-May-08 19:36:40 BST) - is the car i bought . i picked it up for £1600 , is that a fair price or did he see me coming ? by the way thanks for all the replies for the other one i was going to buy but after driving this one i realised how slow the other one was :)

i think ill start crying when i see how little they go for at auction :D but then again iv known a few dodgy motor traders and i would never buy some of the crap , sorry " pre loved " motors they have put thro there :eek:
 
yep i,d i agree with that but there were sum nice motors to be had for little money,and some crap for not a lot,one 300 series v8 went thru for £300 and it was moted bit scabby but at that money who gives a toss

it had a full sevice just 2 weeks ago with all the reciepts to prove including new front pads so i can just get out there and enjoy driving it :D
