Hey, had our Discovery 300tdi a week now and due to unusual circumstances, have driven near 500 miles in it. Hasn't used any oil, running nice as far as I know but I notice that when I start it, especially after a short stop, it puffs out a cloud of black smoke, fairly brief but very noticeable! It's done circa 140k, fully serviced and I wonder if that smokiness is anything to be concerned about? Doesn't smoke when driving and I'm thinking black smoke is diesel rather than oil....I think...yes?

Black smoke is fuel, and it's not uncommon for diesels to puff out a bit on start up, however it sounds like your injectors might be leaking off into the cylinders and the smoke everytime you leave it for a short time is the fuel laying in the cylinders burning off.

Might be an idea to get them tested.

Could be mucky injectors. Try some additive such as Millers in the tank, that's your first step, worked fo me loads of times.

also check that all of the glowplugs are working, starting with minimal use of the plugs tends to result in slightly more unburnt fuel being given off

It may be the glow plugs but put a meter between all of them and check if any are dead ( Seen thread on here before how to check if working), mine was ok , checked and re checked and puffed more smoke than Amy Winehouse for 5 years but no probs ever even on cold winter days.

"put a meter between them all " ?

if you need to check the plugs unscrew them one at a time and while holding the tip that came out of the engine apply a high current 12v supply to them

if you say ouch within 5 seconds of applying the voltage they are working

Yep good idea and wont do it any harm, it will clean the system out, but dont leave it too long, if it is the injectors it washes the bores and can cause a build up of carbon on the pistons resulting in thermal cracking.

If in doubt, put a new airfilter in - they only cost about £3.50+vat so why wouldn't you??

My 200 tdi and mi amigo's 300 tdi both give a little black puff when started hot or cold. Both cars in perfect condition and it seems to be the norm with older Discoveries.

It was once mentioned that this is the price of not having complex electronics controlling the fuel..........suits me!
