if you can 'shake' a rangerover wheel your either increadably strong or thers something very broken about your axle.
do you mean rotate it back and forth?
to check wheel bearings , jaCK the wheel off the ground , hold the wheel at the top and bottom , push the top towords the car and pull the bottom away from the car , then push the bottom and pull the top.
hold it from the sides and try again. you shouldnt feel any play.
to check your driving gear , jack up wheel and try to rotate it back and forth with the hand brake on. if you find play here , which you probably will your half way there. check the prop for play , check the driving members (under the little hub caps) for play and check the diff flange for play. if any of these are worn (or all of them which is usually the case) you will feel it hesitate to pick up when driving away from stand still or changing gear mostly followed by a clonk when it all connects.
dunno how to check the ball thingy , kick the back axle from the rear perhaps?
also check all the bushings as well.
