well, i couldnt tell you regards an actual measurement, but when you put the pads in, if you have to lift them up to get the pins through, thats wrong

obviously if using split pins with retainer plates, the plates actually keep the pads pushed all the way down, whereas pins and springs keep the pads in the same position all the time

they shouldnt rattle side to side at all so i can only assume either

pads are wrong width
calipers are worn
pads are too far up

Just FYI - when I changed my brake pads on my D1 there was a rattle afterwards. My local independent Landy dude said 'oh, yeah, the anti rattle springs sometimes rattle for a bit'!!! I checked and nothing appeared to be amiss and it stopped after a week!

I have had exactly the same problem since a local garage changed front discs and pads. There is a clicking from the drivers side, almost like the noise a CV joint makes but it is a regular click. It usually starts after a couple of miles and seems dependent on how much I use the brakes. It also gets louder the further I drive. If I just rest my foot on the brake pedal I can stop it. I have changed both CV joints, and the front diff. The only thing left to try is calipers. I'm sorry to admit it but I'm glad someone is in the same boat because I've seriously considered binning the old fooker lately.

It has only started since I changed the pads but I took it for a spin around our estate last night and it never did it. I will see on the way to work soon.

Also thanks Mr Noisy for your help so far
