So it seems I have a leak. I've no idea what it is?

Description is, it's clear, thicker than water, but not as thick as oil. (almost like baby oil actually) smells like valve oil that you put in brass instruments.

I'm stumped, any ideas? I can see it around some metal pipes on my engine too, and is dripping underneath.

I have a '94 300tdi Btw.

Help appreciated :)

could it be the steering damper? mine was screwed and leaking a very clean oil onto the road beneath when parked, i was stumped for a while because it was so clean, none of the other oils were every so clear, engine oil is always black, diff and tranny oil has a very distinctive smell, same goes for gearbox oil.

maybe power steering fluid or brake fluid from either the brakes or the clutch header bottles? what have you checked?

I checked brake fluid, and levels haven't changed. Not checked power steering yet. So will check that in a sec. What are the clutch header bottles? And where are they? I'll stick some pics up in a sec, not that they'll help, I doubt!

clutch header is next to the brake fluid one, mine is lhd so on the left side but if urs is rhd then im guessing on the right

It's coming from the nut on that metal rd/pipe Btw, but isn't noticeably wobbly when I give it a wiggle

Ok, so upon reading, have realised these are injector pipes? (correct me if i'm wrong!) .

Anyway, it's the third pipe thats leaking, where it goes into the engine.

So do i replace all the pipes? Is it something i can do, or do i take it to a garage?

Just to ramble a bit more, do i count the pipes from front to back, or back to front? Back being closest to my windscreen.

If back to front, its the third, if opposite, then it's second.

Just checked out the thread on replacing it, and it seems simple enough.

|Yeah, they are the injector pipes. Its not a difficult job to replace, and they are fairly cheap for a full set of 4 [URL="http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LAND-ROVER-DISCOVERY-300-TDI-4-FUEL-INJECTOR-PIPES-1998-R-/251358499473?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a86225291"Injector Pipes[/URL] That is providing you have a 300 tdi. If it has one long fan belt, then yes you have! To change all you need to do is undo the unions on the top of the injectors, and the same on the injection pump. pull them off and replace!

Is it better to replace them all, or just the one?

And yes, it's definitely a 300tdi :)

better? to replace everything with oem new :D

but if the others look fine, then just one will do. they are only around six quid each new third party.

For the price of a full set of 4, its not worth just doing the one. it will probably be easier to take the whole lot off as one piece as they are all tangled in with each other any way. it is also worth changing the injector leakoff pipes. they are prone to breaking and are cheap as chips!

The little plastic or fabric covered pipes that go in between the injectors and the a long one returns to the injection pump.

Leak off pipes?

they return unused fuel from the injectors to the tank, these are what i meant by return pipes,

these are the most likely cause of your leak.

they are small rubber tubes joining the injectors together

have you ever used veg oil or biodiesel as that will rot theses pipes

Nope, just normal diesel, and as far as I can tell, the leak is coming from the nut or union, where it's attached to the engine?
