Have just got a strange knocking/clattering sound from inside engine bay.
took it to local lr indie garage but by the time i got there it hardly made a sound. seems to be from alternator/ belt tensioner. left it a few hours and started it up again and the knocking noise is back and coincides with the tensioner jumping, alternator was refurbed a short time ago vacuum pump bearings all seem ok. took belt off all pulley,s seem smooth running
Any ideas would be appreciated

Had something similar in a Ford Focus once. A day later one of the belt tensioners came off entirely. Was a bit of a concern cos I was, ahem, "travelling" at the time.

sounds like you answered your own Q to me belt tentioner sounds a good bet , prior to the clatter noise did it sound very whisley like a turbo type thing ? i had the whistle under warranty and it turned out to be the tentioner .

Tensioner is two months old genuine LR part checked it and it has full movement and moves freely. but you saying about a whistle it did the other day, now im confused, was thinking it might be vacuum pump bearing but that all moves freely also.
gonna take belt off tomorrow and see if it still makes noise at least that will eliminate a few things.

well it tops up it was the tensioner. brand new genuine lr part from main dealer two months old and gone tits up already!!!! and we slag off britpart for not lasting.
Dealer in for an ear bending in the morning and i will get a refund for the part.
