RangeClassic!

Hi Guys,

I hope someone can help me.

I have 1990 Range Rover classic, whilst driving the drivers side front wheel locked up a few times, now it is impossible to turn the steering wheel to the right (the drivers side) , I have looked underneath and the inside tyre wall (drivers side) has been sprayed with fluid??? I hope all this makes sense and any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

when you say locked up, do you mean it wouldn.t steer or steering became heavy, or the wheel wouldn't rotate?
Does it turn to left ok, or is that heavy too?
Fluid would have to be brake fluid or power steering fluid. You should check the reservoir bottles in the engine bay. Both on drivers side from memory.

Sounds like the CV joint, or even the swivel ball, has disintegrated........

If the wheel stopped rotating, then I guess the CV joint is the more likely fault, though I am not sure why that would cause the fluid leak.

Wheel bearing collapse perhaps? I assume there must be a serious problem in the swivel housing if you can't turn the steering. Fluid could be swivel housing oil from internal damage.

Best thing is to get the wheel off and strip down the hub/swivel housing, see what's happened. Follow a manual (haynes or LR), simple enough. My guess is you'll find a load of smashed up metal bits unfortunately...

As Pete said, CV joint in there as well. Get in and have a look!

The wheel stopped rotating. The power steering is fine turning left.

Thanks guys, much appreciated. I shall attempt to strip it down and see what's going on.
