Good evening, can someone advise me, as to how to go about registering my swb series diesel as classic /historic vehicle . road fund licence free. mot free ? I have been on dvla site but not sure it seems a bit misleading..My landrover is a 1980 diesel coming up to 40 years old soon. Thanks Steve
 
it cannot be classed as historic until after the start of the year following its 40th birthday. I tried to change my 1979 ex mod 109 but dvla told me the date has now changed to 1st april on the year after its 40
 
Minecab is correct my S3 was made Oct 79 it will be Tax exempt 1st April 2020. Its been MoT exempt from Dec 2019 though when I did the last road tax and filled in V112 declaration of exemption from Mot.
 
So the rolling age for being tax exempt has gone? So my 1984 will never be tax exempt.... Did the rules on that change recently? I was sure last time I checked I was only a few years off.

If I've replaced the engine with a de-turboed 300tdi. On the face of it, that would appear to invalidate my claim to historic status however, there is a section which says that acceptable changes include:
  • axles and running gear have been changed to improve efficiency, safety or environmental performance
  • changes are made to preserve a vehicle because the original type parts are no longer reasonably available
It'll be an interesting one anyway. With the price of series engines increasing, the second one could be a valid point.

If your talking about engine changes then this is the important bit.

Alternative cubic capacities of the same basic engine and alternative original equipment engines are not considered to be a substantial change.

If the number of cylinders in an engine is different from the original it’s likely to be, but not necessarily, the case that the current engine is not alternative original equipment."
 
Still a bit of a gray area - the 300tdi clearly is related to the 2.25 engines - well, at least the majority of the bell housing bolts line up!

In my humble opinion your not driving a series Land Rover. Constantly pushing the boundaries of historic status will inevitably lead to us all losing this privilege. Naturally in all of these circumstances the true enthusiasts will be the ones who suffer as the people only interested in balloon tyres and power will move onto a jeep.
If it’s a series you want then have a look for a series engine and remove the grey area. If it’s just road tax exclusion you seek, get a bus ticket. It would seem misleading is an apt term.

I do agree with you but personally I don't have a problem with a change of engine.... Its the coil springs and defender bodies on so called series vehicles that is obsolutely taking the wosname, coupled with off road bling and mud chukkas they've got no right to be on the road in the first place.

But a fast series ain’t a series. Not to mention dangerous and more susceptible to transmission failure therefore more likely to become an obstruction. ;)
I’m all for customisation being a child of Hot Rod and CC magazines. Had my fair share of Q plate cars over the years. Just that I worry about a few spoiling for the many.
Seems to happen with all my favourite things. :(
 
I had 80 out of my 2.2d swb down a long hill.
I regularly do 60 and I don't feel like my life is at risk

What ever happened to people looking at the points system in order to maintain the vehicles original status.
An engine change if not like for like is only a loss of one qualifying point.
There is a minimum no one needs .chassis ,axles engine transmission etc all having various points .
Use ones fingers in say" GOOGLE ", and your prayers will be answered.
