I posted this enquiry last year, but perhaps more restorers are on the forum now & I apologise for raising the subject again.
My RRC has a slight droop in the headlining over the rear seats (with a sunroof providing extra support the front is fine) & I appreciate the ultimate cure is a new HL. The material is still in perfect condition so I'm hoping to delay that expense for a while by making holes through both 'lining & backing with a view to securing the HL with several genuine LR plastic trim fixings that are an exact colour match.
My question is : Can anyone who has dropped their Classic headling for any reason advise me as to where I might have to avoid punching holes, for example does the wiring for the dome lights run under the backing from front to back or along each side, then directly across to the lights?

The early classic lining is Cardboard backed IIRC

thumb tacks shouldn't go all the way through, and damage any wiring ;)

Mine - 1986 non sunroof 2 piece - just had the wiring draped across it.
You're more at risk going too far through when drilling/piercing & putting an 'outie' dent in the roof & that may well split the paint.
When you do do the job ALL the foamy stuff & old glue must be removed before fitting the new lining.
High temp adhesive must also be used.
Did this last year with a Martrim kit. Highly recommended.

Not sure how 'early' the HL is Henry. LR didn't specify a sunroof at all until Oct '87 (mine was built in June of that year) & then it was a steel. The glass version like mine was not available until Dec '90 but the switch & wiring tells me that, although apparently the same spec as the factory offering, it is a retro-fit item. It is reasonable to assume that the headlining (best described as a soft grey cloth) was changed at the same time.

There's no short cut to keeping the headlining up. recover is the only way.
However the bonus on the classic is that it's so easy to get out

Thanks for that but I'm still going to give it a try having obtained the fastenings, nothing ventured - nothing gained as the saying goes ;)
Plus it's not as though my rear seat passengers are wearing the lining like a shawl.
 
Martrim kit for mine - silver/grey material - was £72 delivered. Plenty of material supplied.
If you do go for one get someone to help you as the glue grab is instant and NOT movable.
Do a section at a time & the helper holds the material up - without pulling - as you smooth it into contact.
The various lumps bumps & hollows are easy, just take your time.

Mine has a glass sunroof and is an '89. Headlining is a job I will have to do at some point, am considering whether to spray paint it rather than re-cover
 
Later ones are fiberglass and a right ballache to get in on ya own!

Quart into a pintpot anyone lol.
