my first post !
Was thinking of putting some chequer plate on the wing tops of my 90 hardtop ( 2011 ) are you meant to put any sealant or gasket between the bodywork and chequer plate to protect the paintwork, I know it isn’t going to get seen again but I like to do a job properly

They are usually just riveted on, but unless your wings are in poor condition on the tops where they have been bounced on by the Saints or Wigan's second row, I wouldn't bother.
If you are going ahead, to finish it off you could run a bead of silicon sealant around it to fill in any gaps.

I would advise against it. If they are well riveted on, you don't need anything else. If you want to remove the plate at a later stage, any mastic would make it a PITA.

Thanks for that, I have some chequer plate along the sills already, might get some for the wing tops, am just a bit curious as to wether if any moisture gets between the chequer plate and the bodywork if it does any long term damage.

Why? Are you going to stand on the wings? The previous owner of my Defender fixed chequer plate to the wings and bonnet but I wish he hadn't. He used mastic. Grrrrr........

Not in my experience - I have removed chequer plate from my series wings (for a respray) after a few years use - the paint was fine underneath, despite obvious signs of water ingress.

I has the same thing, mine are bolted on with stainless countersunk rather than riveted, and when I removed them to paint it a quick wash away of the accumulated mud and the paint was the same as the rest of the vehicle.. I think some people recommend sticking a closed cell foam tape around the outside edge of the piece of chequer plate to act as a seal (no issues removing mastic etc from the wing that way) but I do not think it is necessary and never bothered with mine.
