Just been reading up on some people that Dip axles and other rusty parts in a Molasses dip, parts come up nice and clean,
Anyone tried this ? or any other kind of chemical dip ? got an old cast iron bath up my shed so might fill it up with something and chuck a load of parts in for a few weeks. Got to be worth a try with the right stuff, save on wire brushing ect.

I use electrolysis, as it stops when its done. I assume molasses is slightly acidic, so, basically, an acid dip?

Electrolysis works quite well, I have done a bit of metal detecting in my time and have cleaned up a few bits of metal quite nicely.

Otherwise phosphoric acid is quite good

Molasses sounds like a stupid idea, what a mess that would create. I second phosphoric acid (use about 25% of pure) and add some wetting agent. IMO it is still the best rust dissolver and steel passivator available. After rinsing off you can paint the surface with no further treatment.

Yes. I've tried most of them. They sort of work. A bit.

Blasting works properly.

Thank God it finally worked. Not only did he clean it with vinegar he polished it, sharpened it, and replaced the handle and bought a proper sheath....
