dont think it much matters. as long as you leave a few minutes after the engine has stopped to allow for the oil to settle back down into the sump.

just make sure that you never over fill the mark.

it is said that the best time to check the oil is 1st thing in a morning when the engine is cold and all oil has returned to the sump. this guarantees that you will not overfill it ;)

what would hapen if it was overfilled ??
just wondering as mine is above the top mark (just) on the dip stick when cold

Darren M,

The way I know of to fix the overfilling problem is to get a clean container and drain the pan for about 5 to 10 seconds and replug the pan as quickly as possible. It will be messy...I wearing surgical gloves to change my oil. Easy clean up. Once its plugged, take the oil that you drained and use it to refill to the correct level again.

I would'nt put the oil you've just taken out back in as it probably contains all sorts of crap, better to put new in.

it all depends on where you live in the world! (climate matters to your oil)
i use 15/40 multigrade in my 200tdi.

i am actually an expert in overfilling yer engine oil, and its a right pain to get it out, as chrisis or whatever his name is says, you have to drain it out into a container but once you have done it you might as well bin the oil, or tip it down the drain(joke) but be warned its a right bastard trying to get the sump plug back in ;)

sureley it would be easier just to unscrew the oil filter ? obviously depends on amount of overfill

now i know you are having a laugh, have you ever unscrewed an oil filter in a 200tdi, they are buried under the offside of the engine and when you loosen itthe oil runs everywhere and anywhere, if you want to use the "oil filter method" i suggest you park it on a piece of waste land miles from yer house ;)

nah never undone one its just you said the sump plug was a bitch,
and youve just given me an idea i have a £ 30 parking ticket to pay..mmm
i bet they have a clean car park :) lmao

dint pay it..if you look on the back there is abit about if you wasn't the driver of vehicle at the time of the offence..
fill it in and where is asks for the drivers name put in 'no one' because it was parked, so no one was driving it.

i used that a few times when i lived in scotland and it always worked

I would agree that the best time to check oil level ( if you want an accurate reading) is after the vehicle has been parked overnight and on level ground if possible. A few times I checked both ways ( a few mins after switching offand then again next morning ) I found that was about half a litre in the difference .
A few years ago I bought an oil drainer from Sealey which sucks the oil up out of the sump as there were a few cars in the family circle with 'dodgy' sump plugs . I never used it on the Discos as I fit the Difflock system and this is excellent and I also feel the flow of oil out of the sump carries out more of the dirt than would go up through the suction pipe .
However the oil drainer has proved extremely useful for all kinds of jobs as it will suck up water , oil , brake fluid etc. and of course if you overfill the sump you can get it back to the correct level in a few minutes - no mess.

I would not be fussed if its over filled a little over the high mark on the dip stick. I usually fill mine slightly over the dip stick mark anyway. If you look at the LR sump when its off, you will see you can fill the sump, and a bit more, before it will cause a problem, now in my 2.5 the sump takes far more oil than they recommend you put in, so there is some space for error here.

As long as its not so high that the cam is smacking into a bath of oil, or its up to the cylinder walls and being burnt its not a problem.
