Well I have toyed with the idea of connecting one of the triggers to a nine inch spike under the driver's seat of a vehicle, but our local constabulary advised me that this might be frowned upon by the powers that be!

What? what kind of trailer arew you gonna get for that?
And that assumes that the trailer is empty does it not?
I will offer you a deal that I offered someone else who could not back it up.
Tell me what price you would be willing to pay for the advantages that a syatem like my remote control device offers and the ongoing support from my web site.
If it is in any way reasonable I will GIVE you the system for that price... fair?

Devices are available in sizes from a5 and about an inch thick, all the way down to a 10 pence piece.
The very small items are stupidly expensive but are aimed more at professional discreet use. Many of the items available from :fighting: chinese sources are able to be adapted to run on voltages from 3 to 9 or 12 volts but use low quality components and the reliability of the GPS fix is somewhat suspect.
The VTU that I use will operate happily between 8 and 30 volts, and below 8 volts has the option of switching to an external battery. In your case I would suggest stepping up the voltage from 6 to 12 volts and giving the unit a bit of headroom to operate safely.
Are you considering attaching the unit to a motorcycle? or perhaps a boat? both items have certain considerations that must be thought about prior to fitting.

Only just seen this thread but should have posted much sooner.
I've got an old GPS mobile phone hidden in my freeby somewhere (i won't say where on a public forum but it's VERY difficult to get to). It's constantly powered on by the battery and will last for a few days if the car battery dies.
I've the software the company i work for produces (YouGetItBack.com, Protecting & Recovering Mobile Devices Sirus or Ratty, if this is spamming please remove the link but a few might like to use it as it's a lot cheaper than mobileme). The software works on WinMo, Blackberry or Symbian phones so far and Android is in development. If the phone has a valid GPS signal, it returns this, if not it triangulates from the cell towers. It will get around most jammers as the software doesn't send the info back via text message but other methods which most jammers on the market atm don't cover.
A decent jammer can work at around 20 meters, so wiring an aerial to the back wouldn't be too effective.
When the developers are a little less busy, i'm going to see if they add a function that i could wire to a relay from the phone and turn the ignition off altogether.

Interesting use of mobile phones! Just a couple of points that are wirth mentioning -
GSM Jammers will jam the internet connection and the normal network signal nd work with a lot more range than 20 metres.
Hooking the phone up to a relay to switch the engine off is illegal, proceed with caution.
As with everything else you pays yer money and takes yer chance. I am biased, of course, but I still think that sometimes it is worth paying a little bit extra to know that the device will work whenever you need it to, not conk out because it's atired old phone that hasn't been designed to operate in the way it is being used.

Hi, What a great idea. I would love to know more about it as I had my 300tdi stolen and hope to get another landy, might be a td5 but apart from removing the steering wheel, which I use to do on my old transit when i went away or fitting a kill switch to fuel line. if anyone can give some help it would be great.
