I was in Wilkinsons yesterday(grabbing a few homebrew kits] when I notice some wilco own brand 15w/40 diesel oil spec just said syntheticaly enhanced API CF acea B2 £8.50 for 5 litres.I could get two for £17.00 Leaving money to spare for more homebrew :D Will it be ok in me Landy or would I be better spending more on better spec.

Depends on the value you put on your engine, but if it meets all the standards etc then its, your choice. The oil may not have all the additives that the expensive oil has.
Halfords do not tell you who makes their branded oil and look at the price of it.

I was in Halfrauds the other day 10w/40 semi synthetic £22.00 5ltr  Ive just found a local place called crown fuels that supplies farm industry and commercial .Ill give them a ring in the morning see if I can get a good price on 20 ltr tractor universal.

If it is certificated to the rights specs why not I used Screwfix Turbo diesel oil in all my vehicles i have owned inc older petrols because the heat range is so good. Screwfix oil used to meet the specs dunno about the newer one they have brought out used it for donkeys years always with Slick 50 because that stuff is magical! Jai

Asked at GSF car parts for Disco engine oil, they asked the mileage & then advised heavy duty 15/40.
It meets all the specs in the original owners manual...

That's right and fully synth 5w40 is £32 but I wouldn't run a high reving V8 petrol engine on tractor oil.

It seems to me that you are in danger of "spoiling the ship for a ha'penth of tar".

To worry about a couple of quid saving on the price of engine oil seems short-sighted in my book.

I've tried all sorts of different weights of oils in ours, 5w-30, 5w-40, 10w-40, 10w-50, 15w-40 and have now settled on fully synth oil to B3/B4 std 5w-30 for winter work, helps starting and early morning protection, and 5w40 for the summer (it getts quite hot here:D :D )

I buy it from Carrefour for 21 euros for 5 ltrs, so by buying 3, I have enough for two oil changes, that's about 12,000mls in my case.

Filters from Paddocks at £6.28+vat (for a set of 3) for the Tdi 300 engine, this is cheap motoring !!!!!!

I looked at screwfix and they do 10/40 semi synthetic for £14.99 carlube brand. They used to do silver hook oils.I rang the oil supplies place and they do tractor universal 25 ltr £42.99 + v.a.t own brand CF4 spec.

mate that oil will not be api or acea approved i can tell you that now

approvals on the side of cans are a funny business as they are un policed

approvals cost money which is incorporated into the price, have a look at the api approvals list and look for your favourite oil on there

also be careful of the wording as "meets the specification of" does not mean approval, always look for "approved" signature

it tends to be only the good oil companies that have the approvals so be careful, it's cheap for a reason!

Brand Names

best regards

I was told by an oil company 'rep' that many cheap oils DO meet the specs they say on the container..... HOWEVER, meeting the spec and managing to maintain that spec throughout the life of the oil is a different thing altogether, IMHO cheap is OK if you are going to change it at regular intervals.

My 200tdi is getting a bit long in the tooth and the oil pressure was getting a little on the low side, the Spanish spec oil should be 15/40 but I run a 20/50 BP Visco 2000 oil, no smoke, no leaks, good oil pressure and I live on the south coast so the cold is not really an issue, I change it at 5000 KM or 6 months whichever comes first.

regards

Dave

what brand and viscosity is it mate?

also what engine do you have?

The girl said it was there own brand " crown" dont Know anymore .She said someone with more knowledge will give me a ring monday. Its a 300 disco. Thanks for the link Pussyeater ;)

no worries mate

should be 10w-40 semi synthetic in your engine ideally

get a price on Shell Helix Plus 10w-40 and Mobil Super S 10w-40 as well as a universal tractor oil

the universal tractor oils tend to be mineral oils with average specs and usually 10 or 15w-30 so they can be used in hydraulics etc. It's a bit unfair to make a direct comparison price wise because the semi's are a lot better

i think if you can stretch to the semi i would

if you lived nearby i'd sort you some out of our bulk oil tank!

i'm in West Sussex by the way

Thanks for the info, will check it out.Bit far for me to come for a can of oil but thanks again.I,m way up north in sunny Stockport :D

I checked that place out and asked for price. They e- mailed back with one price for the Shell helix 10w/40 20 ltr £58.20 + £15.00 delivery.
