Hi all.
is it a good idea to pump expanding foam into the Chassis of a 1984 Series 3 ?.

A really bad idea
I've seen fords rusted out from the factory foam filled cavities

Something like waxoyl would be a better rust proofer, I’d be worried about water getting in and trapped and rotting away quietly , if you want to Inspect inside chassis That would be impossible and also welding up might cause a few smells and make the job harder

Spray every hole in the chassis with mix of fresh engine oil and diesel 50/50. And do not park on anyone's posh driveway for a day or two.

Hi I was wondering the same thing with my new galv chassis it's been wax oiled to death and after cutting my old chassis up and finding it full of dirt/sand I would use a fire
retardant in case of it needing to be welded in the future.

Expanding foam will trap salty moisture.
Bad things follow.
Bilt Hambler, or dinitrol cavity wax.
Must do mine next month.....

Waxoyl is now rather old tech. Bilt Hamber Dynax is better. A few of the car mags have done trials. All about creep. Dinitrol does also get good reviews, as does the stuff from Rust.co.uk. I like Bilt Hamber because you can speak to the boffin there, Pete Hamber.

The aerosols with the extension tubes from Bilt Hamber are so easy to use. But be sure to blow unused wax through the tube as soon as you are finished.

An old fitter I worked with many years ago used this method on transits. Except he used the old engine oil. Very messy !

Yes indeed. I put the lance on a Ferrosol can and blow that through it to clear the tube.

I agree, there is better stuff than Waxoyl these days, it was good back in the day.

I've used B-H stuff for over 10 years and it is superb. The S-50 wax for cavities and the UC for exterior. The 600mm lances for the aerosols are excellent and really get it in there. I also love the Electrox zinc primer - highly effective.

Before blowing the B-H in there, get a pressure washer and thoroughly hose out the chassis until it runs clear. Drill more drainage holes if needed. Then take it for a drive to get most of the water out and let it dry for a week or so. I'd also spray some B-H Atom Mac in there too, neutralises any nasties.

I had a new 1/4 chassis on the other 88". After I used one of the lances to blow Etchweld etch primer in there to cover the welds from the inside, and followed it up with some S-50 a few days later. Those welds aren't going to rust.
