The original chassie's were made from flat sheet steel welded together to form a box. so if you have the skill and the time go for it.
I think that the original thickness steel was 1.6mm but i have used 2mm to patch with. and thicker bits used around the spring hangers.
 
Ah right. Odd because mine is ex-military and doesn't look like that. Where is the extra bracing?

We tend to use 3mm wherever we do patches or make up sections for chassis repairs.
 
I'm not sure, but I thought a couple of the outriggers were braced compared with civilian chassis, but I'd need to look at them side by side to be sure. There may be an age element as well.
Definitely have a different rear cross member though.
