Hi,

Been wondering about this for a while... My chassis number I think has been incorrect since the day Land Rover registered it. I definitely have a V8 Discovery 2, but my chassis number has the letter "P" in it, which translates to a "2.6-litre, 6-cylinder Petrol".

Is this just a mistake? The HPI check said that engine numbers matched and that there had been no changes to vehicle, so I'm pretty sure it must be a mistake. OR does it mean something else????

Many thanks in advance for your words of wisdom.....:D

Thanks Dippypud, I've had a look at the chassis number info, and it confirms what I originally posted. My chassis number of salltgmP32a says I have a 2.6l 6 cyl petrol in my Disco 2. Should my chassis number start sallgmM32a?????

Have you checked both VIN plates - there's one behind the windscreen on the bottom left hand corner (you should be able to read it from outside the car) as well as the one under the bonnet?

I would expect the chassis number to be SALLTGMM32Axxxxxx as you say. If you have Microcat (links available elswhere in this forum) you can enter a reg number and it will tell you what the VIN should be. If you want me to check, send me a private message with reg number and I'll see what it says.

Cheers!

Graham,

Thanks for your offer, I'll pm you soon... I've just checked the RAVE info, and that seems to say my chassis code should start SALLTGM232A:confused:

Anyway, all the VIN plates, engine numbers etc match what is on the V5, and what was on the HPI check, so I'm sure my Disco is genuine, just has a mistake in it's chassis number. Unless someone out there knows of a Land Rover plan to offer Disco 2's with a 2.6 ltr straight 6 petrol????

The only concurrence which is interesting here is that u have a Discovery Series II(as officially named), and the 2.6 - 6cyl petrol engine was used on the Series II (b) in 1966. I'm sure there is a mistake in your VIN, go to a main dealer and amaze them;).

:5biagree: Looks like it's just a mistake. Or, to put it another way, just another thing that makes my Discovery more unique:biggrin1:

Meego,

Could be you're right, previous owner was someone called "Foreign and Commonwealth office". Sounds dodgy to me;)
