His son used to do all the collections and deliveries to us, so it was him I spoke to. I think it’s Martin that owns the place isn’t it? He said they do a few per year for it, so I thought it would be ok and a decent plan. It wasn’t until I started the chassis work that I gave up on the idea. My chassis was the original, so a 91-92 built item. How old is yours?

I pick my galv chassis up tomorrow, eventually, so will start the rebuild on Friday! Can’t wait, it’s been sat dormant for the last 4-5 weeks.

Get yerself a usb drain camera to poke int side before and after the sand blast to check the condition.

The new shifts I’m on, allow me more time than I realised for working on mine, so I have fallen on my feet with it.

I haven’t really touched the axles, just replacing all brake lines from master to each wheel station, and breathers. The way I’m looking at it is, they were fine before April, so should be good for a few Kmiles yet (hopefully).

I come to Bishop every Wednesday, drop off at the Hospital around 8 in the morning and pick up about half 3, we can sort something out one day.
 
Ive galved plenty of used chassis, but not all chassis are worth doing.
If the main rails are full of crud, i wouldn't bother. To find out, cut a hole about 2 inch square at each end or the main rails, prop it up against a wall length wise, and run a powerwash (or one of the jet washers for drain clearing) down the inside from above, it will also washout the shotblast.
If it's good enough, ask the galvanisers to leave it for as long as possible in the acid bath, as it will allow for more of the internal rust to be broken down.
Fill it with some cavity sealer afterwards.
 
Spoke to the shotblast company again and this is what they will do before going to Galv Company
Blast the chassis down to an S/A 2.5 spec which the galvanize company will want and put the blast hose in any open areas to loosen up the internal rust, this requires a double blast one with a grade 3 expendable abrasive and polish of with a grade 1 expendable abrasive to achieve the 2.5 spec

If you’ve got a main brand pressure washer ( Karcher; Nilfisk; Stihl etc ), you can get a drain cleaner attachment like the one below. I haven’t used one on a chassis before, but it should do a good job of blasting out internal muck.

If you take your pressure washer to the outside of the chassis and give it a good blast, the result is quite different to a shot blasted finish. Obviously, otherwise noone would bother with shot blasting...

If the chassis has ever had cavity wax sprayed into it, I'm not too confident as to how pressure washing would sort it out.

If it's just clearing mud and grime, then a water spray would probably be good enough - then the acid dip at the galvanisers would hopefully do the rust.

I appreciate that, I was really responding to Neilly’s post above mine regarding using a garden hose to clean the inside of a chassis, not specifically prior to galvanising, just general clearing the muck out of a regular chassis. I should have quoted to make that clearer.

Sounds good, are you going to review it after blasting to make sure it has not found any extra holes? before it goes to galving?

Completely Bare now ready for blasting, It really is a decent chassis for its age, just surface rust, on photos hopefully the same inside, so hoping I will not find any extra holes when it comes back, if I do then at least it will be easy to weld them up.
