Hi guys, i have a disco 1 300tdi manual, I'm in need of changing the thermostat, i figure at the same time id do the coolant as well, can anyone advice me on the best way to do this? i don't know how to change thermostat, and i don't know how to drain the coolant.

there a drain plug on the passenger side of block just in front of exhaust down pipe (13mm spanner or socket )plus pull off bottom hose on drivers side of rad , thermostat housing is 2 10mm heade bolts , thermostat and housing are sealed by rubber seal , undo top plug on thermostat hosing and ensure it over flows well before refitting when filling system ,level in tank is necessarily level in engine

Get yourself a workshop manual, if only to know what to look for ... :doh:

and buy the best quality tools you can afford ... :cool:

Wow, I really should have known about that drain plug!
Does that mean by draining the block and bottom rad hose the system will be completely empty other than coolant in the heater matrix?
 
Is there a process to bleed the system of air or just keep topping up as needed until all air escapes?

simple tdis arent difficult at all just remove bungs one on rad and one on thermostat housing refit rad bung once over flowing and the same with thermostat bung ,though often you need to fit expansion tank cap to completely fill thermostat housing ,tank been over full is no problem ,been under filled is ,excess will blow out safely till correct level is achieved,recheck after a run
 
Iwas advised by a LR trained mechanic that to bleed the Tdi system just leave it running for about 20 minutes with the expansion tank cap off and top up if necessary.
Worked with me and saves damaging the rubber bungs trying to remove them

possibly for you,but why be unsure and wait 20 mins when it can be done in seconds, thats why the have the bungs ,and you can fit brass bungs (err4686b
 
Be prepared for your heater not working after a fill up, if it doesnt work you may need to flush it through and/or fill it separately using a disconected heater hose. I find it helps to have the front of the car raised when refilling with coolant, as that makes sure the top bung is higher than the heater etc
 
Cheers chaps. I thought all had bled ok but heater isn't really upto much and I've just fitted new thermostat but was unaware of bleed bung on it. Will check tomora.
 
What's the best way of doing this if the top plug (not radiator one) has been sealed up? I went to replace both with brass ones but previous owner deals broken plastic one up with the putty stuff that goes hard...
