I have had to change the front prop on a 90 as it had broken the UJ and busted the prop its self.

In the process it has worn away the tops of two of the bolts at the transfer box end. The bolts obviously wont come out easily.

So the question is can I remove the flange on the transfer box easily to change the bolts or shall I just go with the old bolts a they are?

The pic is a bit crap as it was on my phone in the dark!

Ah dunno if this is any help to you or not...

but it looks like ye might just get away with unbolting the flange and changin' the bolts

you should be able to tap em out with a tapping stick, then pull the new ones in as yer tighten them up

Slob, I don't think there is space to fit them, what do you mean?

Buster, Not sure if it makes a difference but it is an 86 moddle. Do you know what kind of Torque the nut it is set to?

its bin years since i changed any of em but i seem to remember knocking them out with a hammer and then just pulling the new ones through as they are tightened up. you'll have to rotate the flange to get it in the best position and wiggle the new ones to get them in. if you do take the flange off you'd be aswell to put a new seal in at the same time. dead simple really!

Errmmm... nope!! When ah did mine not so long ago without a torque thingy, ah just dun thum up tight.
Hang on, ah'll see wot haynes has tae say..........

It says for "Prop shaft and rubber coupling securing bolts 47Nm or 35lbf ft"

If I go down the route of taking off the flange, do I need to start emptying the oil out of the gear box?

Slob, is it just the thin piece of metal that is stopping them from coming out? is it important?

if there is enough oil in you,ll get some run out so you,ll need to top it up,you,ll need a new nut or some thread lock as well as i seem to remember they are nylocked

If you have the right amount of oil in the box, then you should lose a dribble, but one you've undone the big nut in the middle ( stick it in diff lock) it will only take seconds to swap the bolts. tighten the big nut to 162 NM or 120 lbf.ft. Or 2 grunts and a groan.

Sorry, forgot to mention that you'll have to tap that metal ring off the back of the flange but its no big deal, Then just tap it back on again

Does not sound too big a deal taking it off, I just need a little strength to get it undone and then done up again! I have some lock thread to put on the nylock.

try a big long breaker bar or stick a pipe over yer normal ratchet;) :D

You'll definitely have to take the flange off to change the bolts an if I remember rightly they are 3/8" UNF but don't take my word for it. If you only lose a small amout of oil it means the seal behind the flange has long gone an all the oil has leaked out any how. Tek the opportunity to replace the seal but get one from a bearing an seal stockist using the old one as a pattern. When you put it all back together grease the seal, put a small amount of sealant on the shaft splines an use a new felt washer. An mek thissen one of these to hold the flange while you tighten the nut up.

The metal ring is a ****e stopper an wants to go back on the drive flang as close as possible to the transfer box housing to stop ****e pushing past the seal.
