My previous thread detailed my BMW diesel engined P38 cutting out & the engine fault light illuminating plus other symptoms.

The fault has now been traced to the injector pump, not the cheap one in the tank, the £1500 one on the engine.

I have a workshop manual, changing the unit seams fairly straight forward other than the need for the tool to secure the drive sproket.

Presuming I could overcome this dose the new pump need to be "set up" using testbook? The manual does not mention this??

Please advise if you have change one of these pumps or have any knowledge.

Thanks

Mike

It's easy to change, though you do need the special tool, it not only holds the sprockets in place but also forces the sprockets of the shaft.

Take the cam cover off and set it up as it says in Rave, look down from the top to the FIP sprocket, if you have the engine on the right stroke you will see a small dimple on top of the sprocket, use the tool to push the old pump out, make a note of the position of the shaft and woodfuff key so that you can set the new pump in the same position, be very careful when putting the pump back in as the woodruff key can pop out!
(a small blob of superglue helps here!).

Timing up the new pump is a right pain without the propper DTI gauge, I modified a DTI for an Astra and it worked well.

Good luck!
