Hi

I want to change the ignition barrel on my Disco, but I'm struggling to see how the old one comes off
I'd assume I'd find two bolts at the top to undo and then the clamp would come off. But the bolts just appear to have round heads. Help!!!

It's a 200tdi

It sounds like you are trying to change the whole steering lock assembly not just the barrel. If it is only the barrel you want to change, turn the key to position 1 and then push the small pin in on the side of the casing to release the lock barrel.

The bolts on ignition locks are sheer bolts so when they get to the correct torque the heads sheer of leaving the round heads.

To remove the complete lock assembly use a centre punch and hammer to tap the bolts around. Alternatively cut a slot in the head with a hacksaw and then use a flathead screwdriver or just cut through the bolts altogether. Be careful not to damage the bottom clamp too much as you generally don't get a replacement one with the new steering lock.

I'm struggling to find where the pin is. Any ideas?

Have a look at the new barrel. It should have a brass pin sticking out OR a small hole for a grub screw. Hold it alongside the ignition lock assembly to work out where where it would be on the casing.

The barrel, is the whole aluminium ignition lock, sheer bolts on top, comes with new key. The switch is on the end, 2 small phillips screws.

Hi I want to change the ignition barrel on my Disco its a 'R' plate 300 TDI GS anyone any idea how much one costs?

How easy is it to do yourself bearing in mind I have a low threshold for frustration.

About £35 from paddocks. It's only 2 bolts that hold them on but they are sheer bolts. You will need to punch then around with a centre punch and hammer. Some go easy some are hard. It's luck of the draw.

Thanks sounds scary sheer bolts maybe get local garage to do it. Long job? what's not a rip off price please?

Thanks for the advice I might give it a go can I replace the sheer bolts with allen head bolts. A breakers has offered me one for £12.50+£5pp is that a good price?

Reply to an old thread - but for future reference, I just wanted to mention the screw holding the ignition barrel, is down inside the shear bolt hole nearest the barrel (200tdi Disco, well mine anyway)
I haven't seen this mentioned around the web.
Once the screw is loosened the barrel should 'jump a little, as it's spring loaded.
Press the Key-end with your thumb to push the barrel free initially, than gently work it out. If you yank the other end, it will just pull out suddenly and all your brass keyways and springs will go everywhere!
