Just bought an 18 year old defender 90 as a project for winter, mountain biking etc and would like to get my 18 year old son insured on it. Direct line class it as a commercial vehicle and they say he needs to be 21. His driving licence does not cover vans until he is 21. Can i change it to be a 'car' by adding seats etc so he can be insured. Any advice please?

Is the vehicle you have a Hardtop or a Station Wagon? I suspect it is the former, in which case, simply ading seats to it won't change that. Whether it is classed as an estate or utility (commercial) is down to the information on the VIN plate. If it is plated as a utility, then it cannot be changed. However, if he has category B on his driving licence, then he can still drive it legally as this category allows you to drive an vehicle with up to 8 passenger seats and a MAM of 3500kg, neither of which is exceeded by a Defender 90. There are several 18 year olds on here that drive 90 hardtops, you just have to find a sympathetic insurer.

Thanks for quick reply, his licence does state B, sounds like direct line is the issue. Will check with other insurers when i get the reg papers from dvla and will post an update.
