hi,guy's, went to change balljoints yesterday, top and bottom, got the top one done with a lot of brute force, went to do the bottom and could i **** get the screw at the bottom of the swivel hub loosened to let me take the hub off to get to bottom balljoint,i heated it ,used stilsons, try'd to turn it with chisel ended up taken chunks out of it but it would'nt ****in budge, has anybody got any idea's .cheers pat.

Drill it out or buy a new complete arm with the joint attached.

:eek::eek:
On a P38, the "Arm" is called the Front axle !!

Cut the nut off, leaving the pin part of the ball joint sticking up proud of the swivel. Give the lug on the swivel a good clout and the taper should come free.

hi lads, i must be missing something here, the manual said to take the 4 nuts off top and lower balljoint, anti roll bar, drag link, which i did,it says then remove swivel hub, then remove collet screw,so by right's i should have been able to remove the hub once i took the 4 nuts off, and didnt need to touch collet screw.cheer's pat.

hi lads, i must be missing something here, the manual said to take the 4 nuts off top and lower balljoint,

The ball joints only have one (Nyloc) nut which locks the tapered ball joint into the yoke on the end of the axle. Can't understand where the " 4 nuts" come into it.

anti roll bar, drag link, which i did,it says then remove swivel hub,

The swivel hub is held in place with the upper and lower ball joints, on which they hinge. I take it you have removed the large nut on the end of the drive shaft, removed the wheel hub which is held by 4 Bolts to the swivel hub...REMEMBER TO PULL THE ABS SENSOR OUT FIRST..the wheel hub can be a right pain to remove as it gets rusted to the swivel and brute force is sometimes needed. Remove the wheel hub and driveshaft. Remove track rod end and drag link ball joints.
Remove the upper & lower ball joint large nyloc nut..no need to touch lower balljoint collet nut. Give the arm on the swivel hub a hefty clout on the side at the ball joint and it should shock it free. If the ball joint pin turns when you start to remove the nut it means the pin is loose. There is a 6mm recess in the end of the ball joint pin which allows a 6mm allen key to be inserted to stop it from turning.
The collet nut on the lower ball joint is for centralising the swivel to ensure that the wheel hub/drive shaft is central with the axle oil seal, if it's not aligned correctly, the oil seal won't last 5 minutes on your first drive !!:eek:

then remove collet screw,so by right's i should have been able to remove the hub once i took the 4 nuts off, and didnt need to touch collet screw.cheer's pat.
:behindsofa:

We are talking about a P38 I hope.

Can you please help me, Irish Rover as I'm told you are the authority on all things....I have bought a dog guard (& brackets) for my 2001 RR but I have no fitting instructions as I made the purchase off ebay. How do I fit the brackets into my RR as there does not seem to be any holes that i can find, into which i fit these brackets.

Others have posted before on this subject before. The instructions for the genuine guard (If LR supply them) is not on RAVE.

Have a look however here to see if it gives you some idea instructions/TDG1006 Landrover Rand Rover II P38 1995 - 2002.php

hi irishrover,i had everything off, drive shaft, drag link anti roll bar,i got the top ball joint, but couldn't get the swivel hub to come off to get to the bottom balljoint ,was the hub just stuck through time, and should it have come off with a good whack with a hammer, cheers pat.

the hubs get rusted in, get a nice sharpe chiesel and put it between the hub and the axle then work your way round till it falls off. it might take some doing but providing you taken the bolts out the hub it should eventually come off. happy hitting.
