Ive been looking at a few other threads with regards to changing my gearbox oil.

My disco seems to have got pretty sluggish of late and I was wondering if it may be in need of a gearbox oil change, not sure when it was done last as I have only had it about 3 months so I want to do it anyway, I've changed all the other oils and filters apart from the Gearbox and Transfer box.

My main question is would it be advisable to change the filter in the gearbox too? As I dont fancy crawling around underneath it more than necessary! Also I've seen Forte Treatment mentioned, would it be a good idea to add some of that too? Just wondering what other peoples experiences/advice with this is and if changing the oil tends to have much effect with performance?

Have a look at what this chap says here: YouTube - WD buy Range Rover 4of5

Mind that you don't have to take the cross member out (that RR has a V8 and you have a 300tdi). More info here: DIFFLOCK - ZF Auto box Oil and Filter change

I would change the GB oil filter as well. You didn't tell us anything about the mileage but you should change all the oils and filters if there's no record of previous changes (that's the rule of thumb). Don't forget the cambelt and the sedimentor.

Yea after watching that I think i'll give it a bash, its done a whopping 220,000 by the way, still runs fine, apart from the sluggish gears!

At that kind of mileage the previous owner is less likely to have had changed the GB oil filter lately. Adding the gear change sluggishness to the equation ==> it's time to stretch your back under the disco and have fun :)

Indeed! Having just spent the last 3 afternoons changing my shocks and brakes all round (and breaking the turret studs too... which was a pain in the ass!) I may aswell make it 4 afternoons and do the gearbox too! Thanks for the video link by the way, very helpful and from what he said it sounds like it could make a big difference (fingers crossed!)

Ok, change all done, what a mess i made! The oil was thick and grey, so I think it was in need of a change, now it changes smoother and quicker however I still struggle to get up hills on the motorway at any more than 50 without a good run up!
