Hi,
Could anyone give me a step by step guide to changing the exhaust manifold gasket on a 300TDI Defender i am sure its not that hard but i don't want to fook it up.
got to start somewhere!
Still got oil getting on the engine block, the rocker cover ain't leaking i cannot feel anything blowing around the head, after much reading on here i cannot think of what the hell else it could be!!
Its not causing a problem just getting on my tits:eek::eek::eek:
 
Been looking into this myself as I think mine is blowing.
One gasket for both inlet and exhaust (ERR3785)300Tdi
So James Martin tells me its only a few bolts and you don't need to undo the downpipe if you are just changing the gasket. You do need to remove the inlet manifold though.

nearside of my engine is slowly getting covered in oil it does not seem to make any difference in performance but looks ****e and i assume that it cannot be doing it any good? i have read around that bolts have a habit breaking of which is putting me off doing it as is my daily motor as well and i don't even own a torque wrench!!! Bloody amateur i know!!!!!!

bolts bont have a habit of breaking ,and you should be able to refit manifolds without a torque wrench ,4 bolts hold inlet then you can get at exhaust nuts x7
 
Thanks James. Voice of reason as always it just ****es me of when two local Land rover garages told me the same about the bolts shearing off and having to drill them out and re thread them which would cost a lot!
Is this going to damage my engine or just make a bloody mess which it is doing quite well!!!!
 
if its leaking a lot id want to see why ,inlet would leak some if gaskets damaged but if a good bit you might want to see what turbos passing

By the rocker cover(leftside as looking from radiator grill) is a little black plastic cylinder called a cyclone filter. this can leak and the pipe goes around the back of the engine and joins the turbo inlet pipe just under the rearmost exhaust port.
 
Live and learn! I take these are prone to leaking then am I right in assuming cleaning the cyclone thing would be a good start before I pull the manifold of then?
 
Ok slightly confused how can a little back pot make such a bloody mess on the other side of the frigging engine I have got there is a pipe around but how does all this mess get everywhere has a pipe fell of or something?
 
Please don't qoute me but there is a 8mm bolt holding the cyclone unit to the rocker carrier. Remove this and disconnect. A rubber o ring is all that seals it. if it leaks the oil will come out and run round the outside of the pipe to under the manifold. Equally - I just learnt that the oil could be from the inlet or outlet manifold.
 
I have cleaned the cyclone it was minging :eek: checked the pipe around the back into the air pipe re tightened all the clips also checked the main air intake for the turbo and did the same.
Cleaned as much of the ****e of as i could with paraffin and tipped a can of this Wynns Engine Stop Leak in case the head gasket is weeping so we shall see if after all this then the exhaust manifold it is!!! But i just don,t understand how oil is coming from the exhaust surely it should be dry???????
