Hi,

anyone know how to change the registration of a Defender?
I want to buy one for my business and could do with it being registered as a commercial.
Or is there an actual difference between the two, other than the V5?

Cheers

Think if it is a hard body with no windows or seats in the back or a pick up even a double cab you could run it as a biz vehicle claim it was a van and put it through your books as such and not pay company car tax on its use.

My L200 is on the books and will probably put the 110 on them as well once it is on the road.

Not sure if you can or need to change the classification, only for tax purpose possibly as above. depends on your business model, sole trader just buy it and use it etc. Ltd company then if it is a car you pay the tax unless it is a pool vehicle...alledgedly.

Questions for your accountant i would suggest

I used to claim partial expenses for running 3 road vehicles for my farming business.
They were just registered as normal PLG.
I think it may be different for non farming businesses.
As you say, question for an accountant.

lf you are limited you can register it as a private vehicle and charge the business for use of it.

That would make me liable for personal tax on the charges.
I could just bill personal mileage but there are limits to that.
As a company owned vehicle, the company pays for all bills which obviously works out much cheaper for me as I just need to pay a small BIK charge for any personal use, but if I have a company vehicle that isn't registered as commercial, the tax man could deem it a company car and that would be bleedin expensive tax wise!
So ideally it needs to be registered with N1 classification.

Try a seacrh, sure this has been posted on here very recently, think he went from plg to comm, and road tax bill pretty much halved, never mind all the other stuff you need.
Iirc can all be done on the gov website

Thanks that sounds ideal. Looking now...

lt depends on what you are using the car for, my Defender 110 is essential for my business, l couldn't do a single customer job without it.
Plus the rear seats are removed to carry tools and appliances.
So if the tax man looked at it, it would be obviously a business vehicle.
Also we have another car which we use for private mileage.
l would still rather have had the Defender 110 Commercial, it was a mistake l made when l bought it, l never thought.

lf l buy another it will be the Commercial version, it's just easier, and cheaper to tax as well.

I wish it were that simple. Trust me it isn't - I've been though it.
But yes, the best option is to buy one that is already a commercial, even though there could be zero difference physically. There's just fewer available though.
