I have a 97 tdi auto that has some body rust. (i know they all do!)
I have the opportunity to get a 98 v8 auto that has almost immaculate bodywork..( But when I say v8 it was but no longer has the lump or gearbox. So therefore is shell on chasis.
My quandry..... How much work is it to take my engine out and place in the v8 shell? of course I will have to change fuel tank lines.. ECU's? and what else? Is this likely to be too big a job? OR
My chasis is pretty good as well just the body work that is naff!
Would it be easier to change the shell?
what are the pit falls of either way?

It has been semi covered, but not swapping from petrol to diesel I think.

IMO it's easier just to lift and swap the body.

The chassis fittings, tank arrangement etc are diesel specific, the only petrol specific item in the body is the fuel injection loom, which can easily be removed. The diesel engine sensor wiring is simple.

So that's my vote :)

Thank You.
There are ECU's within the body cavity. No doubt they will have to be changed as well?

Oh it's tdi auto, sorry.

Ok cars are the same apart from the engine looms, more or less.

Gotta be the better option IMO. If you put the diesel engine into the petrol car then you'll have to change the tank, mounts and wiring.

Change body and you just change the wiring.

could always make a 100inch hybrid! thats my next project (when i can afford it all)

If you've got space, it's dead easy to get a new galv chassis and throw some axles under it, an engine onto it, and then steady build up on the body.

Seems so easy when you put it like that, but tbh it really ain't hard if you've got time and space :)

ive got the space... but ive got about 100quid left .... and thatll be gone in fuel by next month. and also i just dont have a clue where to start, was thinking of using my current disco engine and chassis, but no idea what i would have to do, what bits to get etc. so gonna leave it till the bodys nearly rotted away me thinks

Have you watched the series a 4x4 is born was on sky some time ago but can be found on yOu tube good if you want to get ideas for a 100"

yeah seen it a while ago, will watch on youtube, mostly just need to know how the chassis is sorted out for a defender shell. fuel tank etc, price it up, then get saving

I put a 300tdi in a classic softdash range rover with the help of my local indie, was a straight swap more or less needed an auto electrician to sort out the RR electrics as beeing the last of the classics it had loads of body and air suspensoin computer stuff,
no need to change the fuel tank just took the pump out

was a shame turned a beautiful purring machine into a tractor but was cheaper that a new v8 (cracked block) and I was skint!

Mark Evans is a git. I have is 4x4 is born DVD and it has encouraged me to get on with my projects.. currently: -

My Disco
2x turbo mx5s (one just needs an engine and ecu one is a nut and bolt resto)
a CRM 250 motorbike (done thankfully)
and a very rusty 205 GiT 1.9 (nowhere near done)

Go for the body swap and take lots of lovely photos :p
