Any help please,
Ive just bought a 1996 Discovery 300 and its got a original Radio Cassette player in it.
However I want a Radio Cd player for it.
Has anyone replaced an original , and if so what unit did you buy and whats the best one to buy with a good fit as the original.

Why not get a radio/CD player with an MP3 attachment? Halfords do radio's as you will know, as I was going to fit one in an older Disco but I needed to have something else fitted aswell:confused: :confused:

Hi LK, just for your info, any DIN-size unit will fit perfectly, it's a std size.

As to which make/model to buy - how long is a piece of string??

I just put a new Radio/CD in my wifes car, it cost £50, sounds alright but you could spend £500!!

When looking at specs, go for ones that:
1. Have mp3 play functions;
2. Aux socket on the front to connect an mp3 player;
3. SD memory card reader on the front or usb socket

If you have much music on your computer (or if you think you might have in the future) go for a head unit that will allow you to move the music easily onto your car sound system. MP3 players and SD memory cards do that really well.

Why mp3? Well, if you record your own cd's, you can get 15-20 tracks on one disc using normal CD format, but using the mp3 format it's more like 100-150 tracks !!! So one disc can take the place of 8 or 10 ordinary cd's;

As for fitting , they normally take about five mins and it's really easy !!! Don't pay anyone to do it for you, or they'll only try to rip you off for 'a new lead' or some such.

Well, when I had my ES :( I put a Sony head unit with a removable front that had 1GB flash memory that you could put MP3 on from your PC. And it was a high quality unit - also it was possible (with a few mods) to hook up the rear sub too - brilliant!
 
If you wish to stay with a head unit also with a CD player and fitted with an Mp3 flash drive/SD card dock make sure that the player can play CD's recorded in the Mp3 format, some of them don't and will only play just CD format.
 
i found sony head unit in halfords for about £80.00(discount promo at time), has sub out, (terrific with a little 8" subwoofer.), USB input, aux input(stereo mini jack for" odd ****",( minidisc players, Satnav outputs etc), plays multi cd formats, and radio.
Really pleased with it, went onto upgrade with hertz and vibe speakers front and rear, but tbh. the best it sounded was when i had the orig paper landrover speakers in the front(nice "attack" on the mid frequencies, subwoofer took care of bass.
then i got bored and listen to talksport and 5 live all day now.:confused:
 
I put a 1 din Inphase MP3/CD/USB slot/SD reader and bluetooth head unit in my 95 Disco. It's real neat 'cos the when my mobile rings it just cuts through to the car stereo, even if it's switched off. Only cost £90, works a treat. I hooked up the rear sub woofer too (I've got an ES), no problems at all.

It comes with it's own phone dial pad as weel so you don't need to touch your mobile phone at all.

I've also fitted JVC head end into the disco as well, very easy, no problems. If you've got a Landy rear sub woofer and amp you need to make a slight wiring mod but otherwise very simple.

This bit interests me very much.

We have wo Tdi300's with subwoofers in the back door & I can't get the new head units to work with them. How did you get yours to work, what wiring mod did you make.

Both new head units have 2 phono output sockets to feed amps I think.

I've tried to use these sockets to feed the subwoofer amp but can't get it to work.

I think, from memory, there's a seperate black two pin connector to the L.Rover head end with a thickish black and Red cable inserted. You cut that cable and join the +ve & -ve from one or both of the RCA line output sockets from the JVC head end.

The power wiring to the amp is in the loom itself, so you don't need to worry about the switching of the amp.

Most sub amps are mono anyway, so you can use either the L or R channel or you can bridge them both together into the single red & balck cable.

I'm pretty sure that's all it was.

The other problem I had was that the sub speakers themselves were completely shot and only one of them made any form of sound. I replaced the units with some plastic coned water resistant speakers which I bought of a dealer on ebay, cost about £20, they were a perfect fit and seated perfectly and precisly into the rear sub plastic housing, they sound great now.
