OOPs, Bob, I should have asked, is your roof metal, canvas or fibre glass?

Allegedly, I always found that though some may well tune the antenna to give you a low SWR reading, but there was usually a significant loss of radiated power at the business end. Though, in one case, it help to seriously reduce the TVI I was putting out on sideband (not that I ever used such illegal things,) but sadly, it was only because it was reducing my radiation quite badly.

Ok i have tested all the cables and there are no shorts or open circuts.
Just as a side note i have ibnstalled my mates rig today vertually the same set-up, same rig and antenar.
So i have used the SWR as as described and still get the following on both rigs (readings half way into the red on all channels)
So more details:
Antenar :
Base-loaded CB Mini Tornado Stinger Antenna
Frequency: 27-28 MHz
Power: 1000W
Blue wire is an earth leading to a point on the roof inside.

i had the same prob with a mini stinger - went for a full whip - no probs

Is a 1.55mtr whip abit long for the roof??
isnt a good SWR better than blown output transistors?

Well, to be honest, if the antenna checks out ok then, as MHM suggests, try a different model first. Just buy one incase that isn't your problem, but I have next to no knowledge of this particular aerial as I usually buy Sirio antennae for mobile use.
It's a little difficult to make out from the small photo, but is there an insulating washer between the mounting bracket and the mounting bolt above the plate where I have arrowed?
I cannot see one and if there isn't one there this would short the centre core of the base to the earth. Also, that's an unusual looking PL59 plug you have on it, though that shouldn't make any difference.
